About The Position

The New York Times is seeking a Communications Associate to play a key role in supporting rapid response and reputation management for external audiences. This role is part of the external communications team, focusing on issues management and crisis communications across media, social media, and other commentary forums. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, data-savvy, knowledgeable about the media and social media landscape, and capable of handling high-volume information flows. Familiarity with social media platforms and data reporting tools is expected, along with a solutions-oriented approach, strategic thinking, adaptability, independence, and the ability to earn trust within the organization. This is a hybrid position based in New York City headquarters, requiring some scheduled after-hours, weekend, and on-call work. The role reports to the Executive Director of Media Relations and Communications.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of work experience in communications, public affairs, or marketing
  • 2+ years of work experience working with digital content platforms

Responsibilities

  • Help internal and external communications colleagues design communications plans, manage issues, track data, and build after-action reports to measure success and areas for improvement.
  • Support the external communications team to monitor, triage, action, and analyze public feedback about The New York Times journalism.
  • Take part in an on-call rotation to field incoming media requests after hours and on weekends.
  • Build and maintain email lists, track audience metrics for communications efforts.
  • Monitor and share audience development outcomes to find successes, milestones, and unique stories to share that amplify the value of the Times and its employees internally and externally.
  • Build impactful, collaborative relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
