Commissioning Technician

Green Tanner Industrial•Chandler, AZ

About The Position

The Commissioning Technician supports Green Tanner Industrial Construction's QA/QC and commissioning operations by preparing newly installed electrical systems and equipment for inspection, testing, startup support, energization readiness, and turnover. The role performs continuity and insulation resistance testing, de-energized circuit verification, cable and equipment labeling, equipment detailing, and inspection-readiness activities on non-energized electrical systems. The technician may work only on equipment and systems confirmed to be de-energized. The role is not authorized to perform switching or energization operations, establish electrical clearances, operate breakers or switches for commissioning purposes, or troubleshoot energized equipment or circuits. Any energized interaction, switching, live troubleshooting, or uncertain equipment status must be escalated to qualified personnel and appropriate supervision. The position helps ensure cables, circuits, equipment, labels, and documentation are accurate, professionally presented, safely accessible, and ready for QA/QC inspection, commissioning activities, and client turnover. It supports QA/QC, commissioning, and field operations teams with testing, equipment preparation, deficiency reporting, documentation, and readiness activities.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of electrical construction experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with electrical testing equipment and de-energized troubleshooting methods.
  • Ability to read electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, panel schedules, cable schedules, and equipment nameplates.
  • OSHA 10 certification is required.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as required.
  • Ability to lift, carry, climb ladders, and work in physically demanding construction environments.
  • Strong understanding of electrical construction practices, equipment, installation methods, and mission-critical project expectations.
  • Proficiency in continuity testing and insulation resistance testing using appropriate equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret test results and identify potential wiring faults, damaged insulation, grounding issues, crossed conductors, improper terminations, and labeling discrepancies.
  • Proficiency in de-energized electrical troubleshooting and circuit verification practices.
  • Ability to safely use multimeters, continuity testers, insulation resistance testers, and related diagnostic equipment within the limits of the position.
  • Strong attention to detail, craftsmanship, cleanliness, organization, labeling accuracy, and equipment presentation.
  • Understanding of non-energized work boundaries, escalation requirements, and the distinction between Commissioning Technician and Commissioning Electrician responsibilities.
  • Ability to verify labels, panel schedules, equipment identification, and project-specific labeling requirements.
  • Ability to identify workmanship deficiencies and communicate issues effectively to supervision.
  • Familiarity with NEC requirements, electrical labeling standards, electrical safety fundamentals, and basic commissioning practices.
  • Ability to work efficiently in active construction and mission-critical environments.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and accountability, with commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in commercial, industrial, or mission-critical electrical construction environments.
  • Experience performing continuity testing and insulation resistance testing.
  • Experience with cable and equipment labeling, panel schedule verification, and field documentation.
  • Basic understanding of commissioning processes, inspection-readiness activities, and turnover requirements.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • NFPA 70E awareness or training.

Responsibilities

  • Perform continuity testing and insulation resistance testing on assigned new-construction cables and de-energized circuits according to project specifications, QA/QC procedures, manufacturer recommendations, and applicable standards.
  • Document test results and report deficiencies, damaged conductors, improper terminations, suspected wiring faults, and failed tests to QA/QC and field supervision.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and verification of de-energized circuits under the direction of qualified personnel.
  • Verify circuit and conductor integrity before inspection, startup support, energization readiness, and turnover, and support corrective actions when deficiencies are identified.
  • Install, verify, and maintain cable labels, conductor identification, equipment labels, panel schedules, arc flash and warning labels, and other identification markings.
  • Validate cable tags, equipment identification, source/load designations, panel schedules, and related labels against drawings, specifications, nameplates, and project documentation.
  • Prepare equipment for inspection and commissioning readiness, including removing covers and opening compartments only after confirming equipment is de-energized and safe to access.
  • Clean equipment interiors and exteriors and remove construction residue before inspection, startup support, and turnover.
  • Track loose hardware, fasteners, covers, and accessories, and ensure components are accounted for and reinstalled after inspections, testing, and readiness work.
  • Support equipment lineup and asset verification, nameplate and label checks, documentation review, and punch-list completion without switching or energized operations.
  • Assist with deficiency correction and final detail work to meet quality standards before inspection, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas around electrical equipment and commissioning zones.
  • Coordinate with field supervision and QA/QC personnel to support inspection, testing, labeling, and commissioning-readiness schedules.
  • Follow safety policies, LOTO procedures, PPE requirements, non-energized work boundaries, and energized-work restrictions; stop work and escalate energized or uncertain conditions.
  • Support turnover and closeout by organizing testing documentation, labels, panel schedules, field verification records, and commissioning-readiness information.
  • Escalate unsafe conditions, uncertain energization status, damaged equipment, missing hardware, labeling discrepancies, failed tests, suspected wiring faults, nonconforming installations, and work requiring energized interaction or switching to the designated qualified personnel or supervisor.
