About The Position

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring the cloud runs smoothly by supporting data centers and all associated equipment. The team works on complex problems with numerous variables impacting the supply chain, fostering an inclusive culture that encourages bold ideas. As a Data Center Commissioning Engineer (CxE), you will be part of the Amazon Commissioning team (ACx), a highly creative and efficient group focused on building and supporting Amazon-owned data centers. The ACx team evaluates, defines, and manages construction quality according to engineering designs to meet customer requirements. The CxE supports vendors, contractors, and other teams involved in the construction and commissioning of various critical systems, including medium and low voltage power systems, generators, UPS, HVAC, chilled water systems, Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), testing and balancing, and pumps and hydronic systems. This role involves providing testing and validation oversight of AWS data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure, reviewing design documents, leading Factory Witness Testing (FWT), and managing third-party commissioning vendors for onsite testing. CxEs are expected to take ownership of project successes, resolve technical issues, address schedule and coordination demands, and continuously collaborate on program improvements by communicating lessons learned. They provide multi-discipline input into project scheduling, test script development, designing, and planning, review component submittal packages, and perform system-level and integrated system testing. During commissioning, the CxE audits activities for compliance with environmental, quality, and safety requirements and is responsible for comprehensive weekly reporting on project status and lessons learned. The position covers multiple projects with short timelines, requiring coordination across AWS engineering, capacity delivery, operations, and contractor teams.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • NETA or ASHRAE certification or commissioning specific education courses.
  • Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission critical facilities, especially data centers.
  • Ability to relocate to the Columbus, OH area.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestic and internationally for up to 20% of the year.
  • Required to provide personal transportation for meetings and job visits away from the office.
  • US Citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide testing and validation oversight of AWS data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure.

  • Provide multi-discipline input into the scheduling, test script development, designing, and planning of projects.
  • Review component submittal packages.
  • Perform system level and integrated system testing.
  • Continuously audit activities to ensure compliance with environmental, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Provide comprehensive weekly reporting of status of all ongoing projects and lessons learned.
  • Coordinate site activities, prioritize tasks, and ensure each issue has clear path to resolution across AWS engineering, capacity delivery, operations, and contractor teams.
  • Manage the project commissioning vendor.
  • Escalate to the appropriate stakeholders if project turnover is at risk.
  • Participate in initiatives that drive improvement to the commissioning program.
