About The Position

Merrick & Company is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented college or graduate school Mechanical, Electrical, Architectural Engineering, or Building Sciences student for a paid summer internship for Summer 2027 at our Atlanta (Chamblee), GA office. Merrick’s summer internship program offers meaningful, hands-on experience for students. Designed as a shorter-term, exploratory experience, internships allow students to apply what they’re learning in school while gaining exposure to real projects, professional collaboration, and day-to-day life at an employee-owned company. The summer internship has a commitment of approximately mid-May through mid-August 2027. This intern will support the commissioning of high containment laboratory facilities, including BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-3 enhanced environments. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the commissioning process for complex, critical infrastructure that supports public health, biodefense, and scientific research.

Requirements

Must have graduation date after August 2027 to be eligible.
Must be pursuing an engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an A.B.E.T. accredited program.
Must be currently enrolled and entering junior year or higher of undergraduate degree or currently enrolled in grad school.
Must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and be insurable under Merrick’s insurance carrier.
Must be willing and able to travel approximately 50% of the time.
The client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or commissioning software.
Knowledge of Bluebeam REVU/Adobe Acrobat.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Local candidates preferred.

Responsibilities

Assist in the planning, execution, and documentation of commissioning activities for building systems such as HVAC, building automation, laboratory controls, plumbing, and emergency power systems.
Work closely with experienced commissioning professionals and project teams, including architects, engineers, contractors, and facility stakeholders.
Gain exposure to the full commissioning lifecycle of complex, high-stakes laboratory environments.
Develop hands-on experience with building systems and controls that are essential for maintaining biosafety and containment.
Benefit from direct mentorship by experienced commissioning professionals with deep expertise in life sciences and critical facilities.
Build an understanding of key industry standards such as ASHRAE Guideline 0, and the CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL).
This experience will provide a strong foundation for future career paths in building commissioning, MEP engineering, and facility operations.
