Mecklenburg County is seeking a Commercial Inspector (Building) to join the Land Use and Environmental Service Agency (LUESA). This position requires prequalification for a probationary level III certification in at least one trade prior to receiving an offer. The prequalification process must be started prior to interviewing for the position. The position involves performing the most complex commercial inspections for compliance with all applicable building codes. Under minimal supervision, this role is responsible for reviewing plans, approving construction documents, and issuing permits. It may also involve investigations in response to fires or public complaints, and assisting staff with inspection issues and answering questions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years of inspections experience or five years in construction trade.
  • Associates degree in related field.
  • Ability to obtain a Level III certification in at least one construction trade within one year of hire
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
  • Requires County Driving Privileges
  • Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check required
  • Knowledge of all applicable building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire, zoning and related codes
  • Knowledge of applicable rules, laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures related to code violations
  • Knowledge of customer service principles
  • Knowledge of inspection procedures

Responsibilities

  • Perform the most complex field inspections and enters results, defect codes, and notes on commercial projects to ensure compliance with all applicable codes
  • Issue notices of violations, including stop work orders and follows-up to ensure issue has been addressed
  • Investigate complaints about potential code violations and conducts research on inspection history as needed
  • Meet with architects, engineers, contractors, town planners and other individuals throughout the course of the design and construction of projects
  • Prepare and analyze inspection reports to include collecting data and writing reports
  • Provide advice to design professionals, town planners, the public and contractors regarding code compliance, applicable procedures, and other related issues
  • Serve on committees, task forces, and other teams as requested
  • Make sure that customer solutions, practices, and procedures are carried out and achieve their objectives
  • Complete assigned inspections to meet the customer’s schedule
  • May assist fire personnel at emergency incidents
