About The Position

The Commercial Engineer will support the Commercial Team by serving as the technical liaison throughout the deal development process, with a primary focus on supporting Product Management in the evaluation and selection of railcar assets. This role is responsible for reviewing customer requirements, evaluating railcar specifications, and assessing asset conditions to ensure alignment between customer expectations and the railcar solutions being offered. The Commercial Engineer will analyze repair history, identify potential modifications or compliance requirements, and provide clear, actionable guidance to validate that selected assets are technically sound and fit for intended service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3–7+ years of experience in engineering, maintenance, technical services, or a related operational environment.
  • Strong understanding of equipment types, technical specifications, and component systems within an industrial or transportation setting.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and compliance frameworks governing equipment performance and safety (e.g., transportation, manufacturing, or similar industries).
  • Experience reviewing equipment specifications, service/repair history, and maintenance records.
  • Ability to review and synthesize large amounts of data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear business implications and influence stakeholders across all levels of an organization.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook, OneNote, Teams, and advanced Excel (data analysis and evaluation).
  • Highly self-directed, with the ability to manage competing priorities and timelines effectively.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or similar CRM systems.
  • A willingness and ability to quickly learn industry-specific nuances is essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the rail industry is a plus.
  • Rail industry experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Partner closely with Product Management to support the evaluation and selection of railcar assets for new deals.
  • Review and interpret customer-provided specifications, operating requirements, and service conditions.
  • Evaluate selected railcar assets to ensure alignment with customer expectations and intended use.
  • Assess railcar mechanical condition through available data, records, and inspection inputs.
  • Analyze repair and maintenance history to identify risks, trends, and potential cost implications.
  • Identify required modifications, retrofits, or qualification events (e.g., valves, fittings, linings).
  • Provide clear recommendations on railcar suitability, readiness, and required next steps.
  • Serve as the technical reviewer of asset selections made during the deal structuring process.
  • Translate technical findings into practical guidance that supports commercial and product decision-making.
  • Engage with internal Engineering, Operations, and Shop teams to validate assumptions when needed.
  • Support customer discussions where technical clarification or validation is required.
  • Maintain documentation of technical evaluations, assumptions, and supporting data.
  • Contribute to the development of standardized review processes, checklists, and evaluation tools.
