About The Position

As Commercial Counsel at Aptiv, you will provide legal support primarily for Aptiv’s commercial activities in the United States while also supporting cross-border transactions, global customer and supplier relationships, and other international matters. Based in Troy, Michigan, you will serve as a trusted partner to leaders across Sales, Purchasing, Finance, Engineering, Quality, and other support functions. You will provide clear, business-focused advice that protects Aptiv’s interests, appropriately manages risk, and advances the company’s commercial objectives in a fast-paced global environment.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar
  • Five or more years of relevant legal experience advising multinational organizations on sophisticated commercial matters and transactions
  • Experience gained at a leading law firm, within a corporate legal department, or through a combination of both
  • Strong experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements under U.S. law
  • Experience supporting cross-border or international commercial matters
  • Demonstrated ability to apply legal expertise with sound judgment, business acumen, and a practical commercial perspective
  • Ability to manage multiple complex matters, competing priorities, and stakeholder expectations within a fast-paced global environment
  • Ability to work independently and lead U.S. matters while collaborating effectively across regions, functions, and time zones
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely
  • Strong relationship-building, influencing, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and project-management skills
  • Professional presence, integrity, and confidence to constructively challenge decisions or actions when required
  • Comfort using Microsoft Office applications, AI tools, and legal technology platforms, with a willingness to adopt new tools and ways of working

  • Experience within automotive, manufacturing, technology, or another global industrial environment is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Act as a primary legal contact for assigned U.S. businesses and functions on a broad range of commercial and general counseling matters
  • Draft, review, advise on, and negotiate agreements with customers, suppliers, and other third parties
  • Support U.S., cross-border, and global commercial transactions
  • Develop and implement contracting and negotiation strategies that maximize commercial value, protect Aptiv’s interests, and appropriately allocate risk
  • Develop and maintain contract templates, playbooks, and practical legal guidance
  • Identify and anticipate legal and commercial risks and communicate them clearly to stakeholders
  • Develop practical, solution-oriented risk mitigation strategies
  • Support the strategic management of customer and supplier relationships
  • Analyze and resolve contract, warranty, pricing, quality, supply, and other commercial disputes
  • Coordinate legal support for litigation, compliance, investigations, intellectual property, product safety, corporate governance, and other specialty matters
  • Select, instruct, and manage external counsel when appropriate, with attention to quality, efficiency, and cost
  • Partner closely with leaders and stakeholders across Sales, Purchasing, Finance, Engineering, Quality, and other support functions
  • Collaborate with legal colleagues across regions and corporate legal specialists to support global customers, suppliers, transactions, and projects
  • Work independently on U.S. matters while promoting a coordinated and consistent global approach
  • Contribute to global legal team initiatives, knowledge sharing, and best practices consistent with a One Aptiv approach
  • Serve as a compliance champion and help reinforce Aptiv’s commitment to doing the right thing, the right way
  • Support compliance investigations, training, and related initiatives
  • Prepare and deliver training on contracting, ethics, compliance, and other legal risks
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant U.S. legal and industry developments
  • Coordinate advice on non-U.S. law with qualified local counsel when appropriate
