Commercial Chiller Technician
About The Position
Altman Air Conditioning – Service is seeking a Commercial Chiller Technician to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and maintain centrifugal chillers in commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-site environments. The role includes work on equipment from manufacturers such as Trane, Carrier, York/Johnson Controls, and Daikin, along with related electrical controls, starters, VFDs, sensors, and building automation system interfaces. The technician performs planned maintenance and major component replacements, conducts refrigerant handling and system testing in accordance with EPA Section 608 requirements, and completes operational analyses such as oil and vibration analysis. The role requires clear service documentation, safe work practices, coordination with project managers, controls technicians, and customers, and technical guidance or on-the-job training for other service technicians as needed. The technician must also be willing to respond to after-hours emergency calls on a rotating basis.
Requirements
- 8–10+ years of hands-on experience repairing and maintaining centrifugal chillers.
- Strong working knowledge of centrifugal compressor theory, lubrication systems, economizers, and capacity control.
- Proven experience with major overhauls and bearing and seal replacements.
- EPA Section 608 Universal Certification (required).
- Ability to work under a licensed contractor.
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, sequences of operations, and manufacturer service literature.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and communicate clearly with customers and internal teams.
- Willingness to respond to after-hours emergency calls on a rotating basis.
Nice To Haves
- Florida HVAC or Mechanical Contractor experience.
- Experience with common BAS interfaces, such as BACnet and Niagara.
- Manufacturer factory training from Trane, Carrier, York, Daikin, or similar manufacturers.
- Experience with magnetic-bearing (oil-free) centrifugal chillers.
- Vibration analysis or infrared thermography experience.
- Prior leadership or lead technician experience.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and overhaul centrifugal chillers, including Trane, Carrier, York/Johnson Controls, Daikin, and similar manufacturers.
- Replace major components such as compressors, motors, gears, bearings, seals, oil pumps, purge units, and heat exchangers.
- Perform refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, and leak testing in accordance with EPA Section 608 requirements.
- Troubleshoot electrical controls, starters, VFDs, sensors, and BAS interfaces related to chiller operation.
- Perform oil analysis, vibration analysis, coordinate eddy-current testing, and conduct performance evaluations.
- Execute annual and multi-year planned maintenance programs.
- Document work in service reports, including findings, recommendations, and parts used.
- Work safely at height, in mechanical rooms, and on rooftops while following company and OSHA safety protocols.
- Coordinate job status and recommendations with project managers, controls technicians, and customers.
- Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to service technicians as needed.
- Respond to after-hours emergency calls on a rotating basis.
