Combustion and Emissions Systems Engineer

Cummins•Columbus, IN
•$79,200 - $118,800

About The Position

This entry-level/early-career engineering role applies thermal and fluid sciences to combustion and emissions systems. The engineer uses analytical and experimental methods to investigate system and component performance, understand causal mechanisms, support design and architecture decisions, and develop technical content for effective, competitive, and environmentally friendly products. Work includes system and data analysis, engine testing, supporting resolution of current-product issues, and optimizing performance in a test cell. The role collaborates with systems performance engineers and cross-functional organizations, including OBD, Certification and Compliance, Controls, and subject-matter experts, and may support Systems Performance Integration across engine, aftertreatment, controls, and OBD. The engineer may run a test cell as needed and evaluate field-test data after changes are introduced on test vehicles. The position supports projects involving emissions robustness, deficiency removal and agency approval, Product Problem Solving (PPS), Value Package Change Requests (VPCR), and Proactive Product Improvement (PPI). It applies engineering processes and tools for analysis, simulation, testing, validation, problem solving, and technical documentation. Work is conducted with guidance appropriate to an early-career role, with opportunities to develop technical and product knowledge and contribute to team objectives. This is an entry-level, full-time position. The job posting lists a January 2027 start date and a Master's degree level; it also states that a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field is required. The U.S. early-careers eligibility description is for candidates within two years of completing their highest degree who reside in the continental United States. F-1 students in U.S.-based roles must obtain degree-related CPT or OPT authorization before the assignment begins.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field is required.
  • The posting identifies the degree level for this opening as Master's degree.
  • Entry-level/early-career status; the U.S. early-careers eligibility requirements describe candidates as being within two years of completing their highest degree and residing in the continental United States.
  • For F-1 visa students applying to U.S.-based roles, approved, degree-related CPT or OPT authorization is required before the assignment begins.
  • Analytical skills, including system analysis and data analysis.
  • Ability to perform experimental work, including engine testing of instrumented current-product engines.
  • Flexibility, interpersonal skills, good communication skills, and ability to interact cross-functionally.
  • Ability to manage work priorities when working on more than one project at a time.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant experience in temporary student employment, such as an internship or co-op, extracurricular team activities, or as an early-career professional in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB, Calterm, Calbert, Cross, CDAT, Minitab, or other engineering software.
  • Mechanical Engineering is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in investigating product, system, or technology issues by collecting data, performing basic analysis, and preparing draft documentation under supervision.
  • Use engineering tools such as MATLAB, Calterm, CDAT, and Minitab to complete predefined tasks, data analysis, and simulations with guidance.
  • Participate in engineering processes such as Project Problem Solving (PPS), Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG), Value Package Introduction (VPI), and Engineering Standard Work (ESW).
  • Support testing and validation by assisting with test setup, data collection, and preliminary analysis under engineer supervision.
  • Conduct analytical work, including system and data analysis, and support experimental work, including engine testing of instrumented current-product engines.
  • Assist in identifying solutions to current-product issues and optimizing system performance in a test cell.
  • Run a test cell as needed, supporting Systems Performance Integration across engine, aftertreatment, controls, and OBD.
  • Evaluate field-test data after changes are rolled out to test vehicles.
  • Work with cross-functional project teams, including OBD, Certification and Compliance, Controls, and subject-matter experts.
  • Prepare draft documentation for design changes, test results, and analysis findings for review.
  • Attend team meetings and technical discussions, prepare notes or draft summaries, and communicate observations and questions.
  • Collaborate with technicians and other interns on assigned tasks, escalating coordination needs to a mentor or supervisor.
  • Manage priorities when working on multiple projects and contribute to team goals and personal learning.
  • Investigate thermal- and fluid-science problems, identify causal mechanisms, recommend actions, support resolution, and document results.
  • Support analysis, testing, stakeholder communication, feasibility studies, design optimization, and architecture definition for project decisions.
