Combat System Analyst

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Engagement Optimization Group (A3I) at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory seeks a motivated and innovative Combat System Analyst to evaluate command and control systems, conduct systems engineering studies, and assess system-level performance. The position supports the development of command and control systems for homeland and theater missile defense, working with current and future Aegis Combat System baselines and emerging Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) architectures. The analyst evaluates system performance using ground test, flight test, and operational data; leads studies of new capabilities and design alternatives; and develops analytical techniques and tools to assess performance and identify anomalies. The role also involves working with sponsors and contractors to investigate deficiencies, identify root causes, and evaluate solutions, while building expertise in Aegis command and decision algorithms, combat system behavior, and IAMD concepts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in systems engineering, technical analysis, or evaluation of complex systems.
  • Experience programming in MATLAB and/or Python.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by the start date and ultimately a Final Secret clearance; eligibility requires U.S. citizenship.

  • Experience developing innovative approaches to solve complex technical problems.
  • Experience conducting systems engineering studies, evaluating design alternatives, or influencing system design.
  • Experience developing analytical tools, models, or simulations to investigate system behavior.
  • Familiarity with combat systems, particularly the Aegis Weapon System or integrated air and missile defense concepts.
  • Experience supporting DoD programs or working with defense contractors.
  • Active Secret or higher security clearance.
