About The Position

As Ohio’s Secretary of State, the office plays a vital role in supporting a thriving democracy and a strong economic future for all Ohioans. As the state’s chief elections officer, the Secretary of State works to ensure that Ohio’s elections are secure, accessible, and efficiently administered. The office also serves as the front door for entrepreneurs starting new businesses in the Buckeye State - providing essential resources and processing filings that help Ohio’s economy grow. The Ohio Secretary of State’s Office offers meaningful opportunities to learn how state government serves millions of Ohioans every day. This position is Unclassified per ORC 124.11 (A) (30). This internship is located in Columbus, Ohio, and is open to current undergrad college students exploring careers in (but not limited to) political science, communications, business, and public administration. If you’re looking for an internship that makes a difference - and a chance to learn from one of the nation’s leading elections and business administration teams - this is the place to grow. Interns may work 20–40 hours per week and gain hands-on experience while earning course credit (as approved by their college or university). We are seeking motivated, curious, and service-minded students who want to support Ohio voters, entrepreneurs, and communities. Successful interns are team-oriented, detail-focused, and excited to learn how state government works from the inside. The Secretary of State’s Office includes a variety of divisions, and placements will be based on interest areas and project needs.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited college, university, or community college.
  • Be in good academic standing (minimum 2.5 GPA recommended).
  • Demonstrate interest in government, elections, communications, or public service.

Responsibilities

  • Gain a broad understanding of the Secretary of State’s role in elections administration and business services
  • Support projects in external affairs, communications, elections, public integrity, operations, and administration
  • Assist staff in preparing for elections, public outreach events, and other office initiatives
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and learn from experienced public service professionals
  • Contribute to work that directly impacts Ohioans
