About The Position

This position is open to Alaska Residents only. The Department of Revenue, Tax Division is recruiting for a College Intern in Anchorage or Juneau. Pay will be determined based on the location of the selected individual. The Tax Division’s mission is to collect taxes, inform stakeholders, and regulate charitable gaming, and the Economic Research Group supports that work by providing clear, meaningful analysis that helps Alaska make smart financial decisions. As an intern, you’ll join a team that values curiosity, strong analytical skills, and a genuine interest in Alaska’s economy, while giving you the chance to work on projects that matter. We’re looking for motivated students who enjoy digging into data and collaborating with others to produce high-quality, impactful work.

Requirements

  • Currently accepted, enrolled, and attending an accredited college in an undergraduate degree program while maintaining an academic load of at least six credit hours per semester (eight credit hours per quarter).
  • In good standing with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  • Have successfully completed training as a College Intern 1 or 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of coursework in the degree program.
  • Currently enrolled in and attending upper division classes in a declared major related to the body of work to be performed.
  • Have successfully completed training as a College Intern 2 or 56 semester (84 quarter) hours of coursework in the degree program.
  • Have successfully completed training as a College Intern 3 or 88 semester (132 quarter) hours of coursework in the degree program of which at least 12 semester (16 quarter) hours were upper division coursework in a declared major directly related to the assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Computer Skills: Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.
  • Economics: Knowledge of economic policy, principles, and practices, market and non-market values, and the analysis and reporting of economic data.
  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on research and analysis that directly informs Alaska’s revenue outlook — including tax policy, state revenues, and key industries like energy.
  • Spearhead a research/analysis project, culminating in a formal white paper and presentation at the end of the term.
  • Work directly with the Alaska's official revenue forecast, as well as its fiscal and economic models.
  • Contribute to real-world policy by analyzing legislation and proposed tax changes that could impact the state’s financial future.
  • Build valuable technical skills using enterprise-level database and accounting systems, advanced Excel tools, and statistical analysis software.
