About The Position

Under the Director of Marine Resources, this role involves working independently and as part of a team to collect marine salt and fresh water specimens for research. Duties include the care and shipping of organisms, and supervised marine specimen dissection. The position also entails training and supervising temporary staff, maintaining diving records, and ensuring diving equipment is in safe condition. Additionally, the role requires maintaining central department records such as collecting logs, safety equipment logs, equipment maintenance and repair logs, and personnel training/certification records (CPR, First Aid).

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic outboard engine mechanics.
  • Knowledge of collecting gear and collecting technique.
  • Ability to operate safely outboard boats and pickup trucks with trailers.
  • Must have valid Massachusetts driver's license, with a favorable driving record.
  • Must have and maintain current Advanced First Aid Certification/CPR.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in Marine Zoology.
  • Must have current open water scuba certification and experience in scuba diving.
  • Must have current American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) certification or ability to qualify for such certification.

Nice To Haves

  • High school education with knowledge as a marine biologist and/or marine naturalist.
  • Four years and 100 hours of diving experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of fishing techniques and the various species of marine life found in the Northeast.

Responsibilities

  • Perform various related duties in connection with the gathering, shipping, and care of specimens, including supervised marine specimen dissection.
  • Train and supervise temporary staff.
  • Maintain all diving records and ensure that all diving equipment is maintained in a safe condition.
  • Maintain the following central records for the department: Collecting logs, Safety equipment logs, Equipment maintenance and repair logs, Personnel training/certification, CPR, First Aid records.
  • Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
