About The Position

Seeking an interim facility coding manager to oversee facility inpatient, observation, day surgery, and emergency department coding operations. This is a working manager role, requiring the candidate to have strong coding knowledge and be able to assist with auditing and coding questions. The role is with an academic trauma level 1 hospital and is 100% remote for a 6-12 month engagement. The schedule is Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm MST.

Requirements

• Minimum 5+ years of leadership experience in facility coding operations.
• Extensive expertise in Inpatient coding.
• Extensive expertise in Outpatient facility coding (ED, observation, ambulatory/day surgery).
• Proven ability to function in a working manager capacity, including hands-on coding, auditing, and staff support.
• Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS, and official coding guidelines.
• Demonstrated experience with coding quality reviews, audits, and team performance management.
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
• Experience with Cerner and 3M required.
• Able to work M-F 8a - 4:30p MST.
• Ok with interim role of 6-12 months.
• Able to pick up new workflows and technology easily.
• Good written and verbal communication.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience with an academic trauma level 1 facility highly preferred.
• Relevant coding certifications (e.g., RHIA, RHIT, CCS).
• Prior experience in interim or consulting roles.
• Experience managing remote coding teams.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily coding operations for Inpatient (IP), Observation, Day Surgery, and Emergency Department (ED).
• Provide leadership, guidance, and performance oversight to coding teams across all facility settings.
• Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for facility coding, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and regulatory requirements.
• Perform coding audits and quality reviews to maintain accuracy and productivity standards.
• Support coders with complex coding scenarios, escalations, and education.
• Monitor and improve coding quality, turnaround times, and operational efficiency.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders on process improvements and coding compliance initiatives.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, payer requirements, and regulatory changes.
