Code & Structural Welder

Wood PLC•Homestead, FL

About The Position

The Code & Structural Welder selects pipe and related materials and equipment according to specifications, then plans layouts, assembly, and welding based on knowledge of geometry, metal properties, machining, weld shrinkage, and welding techniques. The role involves positioning, aligning, fitting, bolting, clamping, and welding metal components and structural forms according to blueprints and metallurgy. Work may include flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead welding positions, and may require use of gas-metal arc, flux-cored arc, gas-tungsten arc, submerged arc, or shielded metal arc processes. The welder connects and configures welding equipment to specified settings and selects and loads the required electrode or consumable wire. The role requires proficiency in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW and the ability to produce welds that meet non-destructive examination requirements.

Requirements

  • Capable of certifying on multi-process pipe.
  • Proficient in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding processes.
  • Capable of producing welds that meet non-destructive examination (NDE) requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Select the type and size of pipe, related materials, and equipment according to specifications.
  • Select equipment and plan layouts, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, metal properties, machining, weld shrinkage, and welding techniques.
  • Lay out, position, align, and fit components together in various body positions.
  • Bolt, clamp, and weld metal components, including piping systems, plate, pipe, tube, and structural shapes, using arc and arc-gas welding equipment.
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions and tack-weld assemblies when needed.
  • Connect the welding-unit cable and obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse settings specified by procedure or supervisor.
  • Obtain the specified electrode and insert it into a portable holder, or thread consumable electrode wire through a portable welding gun.
  • Lay out, align, and weld fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings, and pipe according to blueprints and metallurgy.
