Welder Structural

Brown & Root•Westlake, LA

About The Position

The Structural Welder lays out, aligns, fits, and welds fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms, machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings, and piping according to blueprints and metallurgy. The role involves combination welding and may require certification on multi-process pipe, proficiency in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW processes, and x-ray-quality welds. Welders perform only procedures for which they are certified and must pass employer performance or standard tests to meet certification standards. The position works under immediate supervision and relies on instructions and established guidelines. Primary duties generally do not require independent judgment; the role typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Respiratory protection is common and may be required. The job also includes material handling, assisting with installation and other mechanics’ work, and following safety and project rules.

  • Select and install electrodes or feed consumable electrode wire through a welding gun.
  • Operate the power supply and create an arc to melt and deposit metal and join workpiece edges.
  • Guide the electrode or gun along the weld line while maintaining the required arc length, speed, and movement to achieve the specified fusion and bead.
  • Apply filler rod manually when needed.
  • Clean or degrease weld joints and work areas; repair cracked or broken parts and fill holes.
  • Remove excess or defective weld material, slag, and spatter using appropriate tools.
