About The Position

CTG is seeking a COBOL Performance Analyst for a client. The role focuses on analyzing and optimizing COBOL applications, SQL queries, and batch processing in a Micro Focus distributed runtime environment to improve performance and reduce resource utilization. The analyst will investigate application bottlenecks, memory issues, high-resource transactions, workload capacity, processing failures, and abnormal runtime behavior, and recommend sustainable solutions. The position also involves analyzing database-intensive workloads and transaction integrity, documenting findings and corrective actions, and collaborating with engineering, operations, quality assurance, and customer teams. Established security, change-control, testing, and documentation procedures must be followed. The role provides expert COBOL performance analysis and optimization; z/OS systems programming is outside its scope. The position is primarily remote, with occasional in-person customer meetings as required by project needs. The assignment duration is 12 months. Support for critical issues outside regular business hours, including weekend on-call support, may be needed. The expected base salary is $55.00 to $59.00 per hour, and a competitive benefit package is offered.

Requirements

  • Strong COBOL application development, performance tuning, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience analyzing SQL queries, database access patterns, and batch processing workloads.
  • Proficiency with performance monitoring, profiling, tracing, and diagnostic tools.
  • Knowledge of Micro Focus Enterprise Server and distributed application runtime environments.
  • Familiarity with Db2 or other relational databases, transaction processing, and data reconciliation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, root-cause analysis, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, operations, QA, and customer teams.
  • Ability to support critical issues outside regular business hours, including weekend on-call support as needed.
  • Typically 5–10+ years of experience in COBOL application analysis, performance tuning, and troubleshooting within large enterprise, financial services, or government environments.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and resolving application performance issues involving COBOL code, SQL queries, database processing, and batch workloads.
  • Experience using application monitoring, profiling, and diagnostic tools to investigate resource utilization and runtime performance.
  • Experience working in Micro Focus or comparable distributed COBOL runtime environments.
  • Familiarity with enterprise transaction processing, application capacity analysis, and performance testing.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills and ability to interact professionally with a diverse group.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • Experience with IBM mainframe technologies such as z/OS, COBOL, Db2, CICS, JCL, and VSAM, as applicable to the application environment.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and optimize COBOL application code, SQL queries, and batch processing in a Micro Focus distributed runtime environment.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks, memory issues, high-resource transactions, and inefficient batch workloads using profiling, monitoring, and diagnostic analysis.
  • Monitor application workloads, assess capacity requirements, and evaluate online and batch processing performance under varying workloads.
  • Investigate processing failures, performance anomalies, and abnormal runtime behavior; perform root-cause analysis and recommend sustainable solutions.
  • Review COBOL code, database access patterns, and data retrieval processes to improve processing efficiency and transaction performance.
  • Analyze database-intensive workloads, transaction integrity, and data reconciliation involving Db2 or other relational databases, as applicable.
  • Use Micro Focus Enterprise Server and distributed application profiling and diagnostic tools to trace issues and validate performance improvements.
  • Document findings, performance recommendations, and corrective actions while collaborating with engineering, operations, and quality assurance teams.
  • Follow established security, change-control, testing, and documentation procedures when conducting analysis or recommending application changes.
  • Support critical issues outside regular business hours, including weekend on-call support as needed.
