About The Position

Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia has an opening and is accepting applications for an Assistant Varsity Girls' Basketball Coach position that is available for the 2026-2027 school year at Blacksburg High School. Under the direction of the Athletic Director and/or Principal, the coach must plan and implement a high quality athletic program that stresses fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship while maintaining high safety standards for all athletes. The coach must also be committed to high academic standards for all athletes by monitoring the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met. The coaching assignment is a supplemental assignment for a designated athletic season and is compensated in accordance with the School Board-approved athletic supplement schedule. It is not a separate salaried position. The supplement compensates the individual for the successful completion of the responsibilities associated with the designated coaching assignment during the designated athletic season from October 9, 2026, through March 13, 2027. If the individual begins the assignment after the designated period has started, resigns or is removed from the assignment before completion, or otherwise does not fulfill the assignment for the entire designated period, the supplement may be prorated as appropriate. Appointment to a coaching assignment does not guarantee appointment or reappointment to the same or any other coaching assignment in a subsequent season or school year. The Coach’s schedule is determined by the requirements of the assigned sport and may include practices, competitions, tournaments, meetings, travel, and other activities occurring before or after the regular school day, during evenings and weekends, and on school holidays or breaks when scheduled and permitted by the VHSL.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
Must be age 21 or older
Successful completion of the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) course and test entitled “Basic Virginia High School League Course” accessible at http://www.asep.com/asep_content/org/VHSL.cfm prior to beginning coaching duties with MCPS (Courses completed before 2009 do not satisfy this requirement).
Successful completion of the NFHS Concussion in Sports course accessible at www.nfhs.org prior to beginning coaching duties with MCPS.
Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, and school administrators
Ability to motivate students
Ability to be dependable and punctual
Regular and predictable on-site attendance is required

Nice To Haves

Previous experience as a coach or participation in the sport at the high school or college level
Current CPR certification
