About The Position

The Co-Simulation Engineer III develops multi-domain co-simulation and digital twin capabilities for data center design and construction, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of data centers and their internal and external environments. As part of the Engineering Team, the role works closely with the Project Management Team to produce hydraulic network models, CFD models, digital twin applications, and quality-controlled design specifications through engineering modeling. The position receives limited day-to-day direction and general instruction for new projects or assignments. It executes and supports project leadership on projects of complex scope, working independently or under limited supervision. The engineer collaborates with design, commissioning, operations, CFD, project management, client, and internal teams to develop, integrate, validate, and report on models and their findings. The role is remote from most locations in the United States, with approximately 10% travel that may include any of the 50 states.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar relevant engineering field and five years of experience in a consultancy setting; alternatively, a Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a similar relevant engineering field and two years of consultancy experience.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and hydraulics, including pump, valve, and pipe networks and control impacts.
  • Strong knowledge of chilled-water systems, including flow control, balancing, and operating envelopes.
  • Experience with hydraulic or flow-network tools such as Flownex, Siemens Flomaster, Aspen HYSYS, or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of at least one CFD tool for data center and equipment analysis, such as Cadence Reality DC Design, ANSYS Fluent, Siemens STAR-CCM+, or equivalent.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs and MEP design documents.
  • Skilled in MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams, and in organizing and managing files.
  • Ability to complete assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment, demonstrating communication and organizational skills, self-motivation, proactiveness, and resourcefulness in a distraction-free workspace.
  • Ability to interpret results and communicate effectively in writing and verbally to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports, and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate directly with clients and, at times, serve as the primary client contact.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently with moderate supervision.
  • Organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks across concurrent modeling efforts.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, with reasonable accommodations available as described in the posting.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 10%, potentially to any of the 50 U.S. states.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Familiarity with hyperscale data centers and liquid-cooled applications.
  • Programming skills in Python, C/C++, MATLAB, or similar.
  • Experience using Flownex is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with design teams to define co-simulation objectives, key performance metrics, acceptance criteria, modeling prerequisites, required data, assumptions, and initial conditions.
  • Identify coupling strategies and model boundaries across 1D networks, 3D CFD, and controls; anticipate challenges and recommend changes to design parameters or modeling methods.
  • Independently develop thermo-hydraulic flow-network models for chilled-water and liquid-cooling systems, including pumps, valves, heat exchangers, CDUs, manifolds, and cold plates.
  • Build and maintain system-level steady-state and transient models, including redundancy and failure-mode scenarios and control-logic impacts.
  • Develop interfaces between 1D networks and 3D CFD or thermal models, managing data exchange, time steps, and convergence.
  • Perform pressure-drop, flow-balancing, and heat-rejection analyses to validate design intent and support equipment selection and sizing.
  • Create and maintain simulation-ready system schematics, component libraries, metadata, reusable model assets, and digital-twin workflows.
  • Develop or review model setup, boundary conditions, solver settings, co-simulation time steps, and quality checks appropriate to the intended use case.
  • Prepare or review detailed co-simulation reports documenting assumptions, methodology, results, and actionable design recommendations.
  • Assist with proposals by defining modeling scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Present modeling findings, interpret results, and provide engineering recommendations to clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Manage modeling tasks, including resource forecasting, coordination, and version control of model assets and scripts.
  • Perform QA/QC peer reviews of co-simulation models when not the lead analyst.
  • Validate and calibrate system and co-simulation results using analytical techniques and real-world data.
  • Collaborate with design, commissioning, and operations teams to collect and reconcile site data, including BMS/SCADA data and flow, temperature, and pressure measurements.
  • Prepare validation and calibration reports comparing model predictions with measurements and documenting uncertainty, limitations, and performance envelopes.
  • Coordinate with the CFD and project management teams to align system models, CFD models, and design intent.
  • Review and respond to technical queries about modeling assumptions, co-simulation results, and design implications.
  • Review and complete validation checklists and documentation; contribute to modeling standards and continuous improvement.
  • Review and approve model updates based on validation findings and project changes.
  • Prepare project progress reports, issue logs, and model status updates for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain model libraries, coupling scripts, and project documentation, including assumptions logs, revision histories, and applicable RFI responses.
  • Manage personal hours using company tools.
  • Use AI-enabled and digital tools to improve efficiency, reduce manual effort, and support consistent, high-quality work.
  • Identify process-improvement opportunities, learn new technologies and methods, and support adoption of evolving digital workflows.
  • Complete assigned tasks and deliverables on time and on budget; perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Follow company and site safety requirements and communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and technical and non-technical audiences.
