About The Position

The Prototype Technician – CNC Machining is responsible for developing, machining, and refining prototype components to support product development and engineering validation. This role bridges design engineering and manufacturing by translating CAD models into functional prototypes using CNC machining and related processes. The ideal candidate is hands‑on, detail‑oriented, and thrives in fast‑paced, low‑volume, high‑precision environments.

Requirements

3+ years of hands‑on CNC machining experience, preferably in a prototype or R&D setting
Proficiency in CNC setup, operation, and CAM programming
Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, and blueprint reading
Ability to use precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM, etc.)
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Nice To Haves

Experience with 4‑axis or 5‑axis machining
Background in mechanical engineering or product design
Experience with rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, manual machining, EDM)
Familiarity with product development or new product introduction (NPI) environments

Responsibilities

Develop and machine prototype parts using CNC mills, lathes, and multi‑axis equipment
Interpret CAD models, engineering drawings, and specifications to plan machining strategies
Program CNC machines using CAM software (Mastercam)
Select appropriate tooling, fixturing, materials, and cutting parameters
Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC equipment
Perform first‑article inspections and dimensional verification using precision measuring tools
Collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, and quality engineers to optimize part designs
Modify designs and machining processes based on prototype test results and feedback
Document processes, tooling, programs, and lessons learned for future production transfer
Support rapid iteration and short‑run builds with a focus on speed, accuracy, and quality
Time management in fast‑turn environments
