CNC Programmer

VERUS AEROSPACE FINANCE•Torrance, CA

About The Position

The CNC Programmer supports the engineering department by using computer software to program machines and develop tooling for aerospace production. The role creates CNC programs for contour-path machining of metal parts on three- to five-axis machine tools and develops programs, drawings, bills of materials, fixture designs, and setup documentation for tooling of varying complexity. The programmer works with engineering, quality, production, and shop-floor personnel to meet product-build and production-rate goals while adhering to engineering procedures, customer specifications, and required quality levels. The role also supports continuous improvement by refining cutting methods, simplifying tooling and processes, reducing costs, and improving quality. The position includes ongoing self-training and regular reporting and recordkeeping for tasks and project status.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of CAD/CAM experience programming aerospace structural components made from metallic materials.
  • MasterCam programming experience.
  • Experience using VeriCut machine simulation and verification software.
  • Working knowledge of aerospace engineering models, drawings, and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of CNC machine controls and basic G-code.
  • Strong machining background, including cutting-tool speeds and feeds for aerospace metallic materials.
  • Ability to design and program fixtures and tooling.
  • Ability to handle varied assignments, from technical analysis and economic justification to data entry.
  • Desire to serve internal and external customers.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent work experience in programming and CNC machining.

Nice To Haves

  • NC programming in CATIA is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Use CATIA, MasterCam, and VeriCut to program contour-path machining of metal parts on three- to five-axis machine tools.
  • Use CAD/CAM software to program fixtures and produce drawings and bills of materials for tooling such as holding fixtures, drill jigs, form blocks, and check fixtures.
  • Create CNC programs, tool designs, and concepts to support end-item product builds and production rates while meeting engineering and quality specifications.
  • Analyze drawings, part design data, and tooling methods to determine tool paths, cutting-tool selection, and machine speeds and feed rates.
  • Ensure conformance with established procedures and quality requirements.
  • Work with shop-floor leadership and personnel on new product development, and with Production to determine the type and sequence of tooling and production operations.
  • Create computerized setup documents containing tool requirements and CNC programs.
  • Continuously improve cutting methods to reduce cost and improve quality.
  • Suggest process or product-design changes that simplify tooling and reduce cost.
  • Create fixture setup documents and planning outlines for CNC programming.
  • Undertake ongoing self-training to increase personal effectiveness.
  • Regularly report task and project status and maintain records of personal backlog and work status.
