Set up and operate numerical control program machines to fabricate parts. Plan numerical control programs for contour-path machining of metal parts on automatic machine tools. Analyze drawings, sketches, and design data to determine part dimensions and cut configurations, then define machine reference points and cutting-path directions. Calculate angular and linear dimensions, radii, and curvatures, and outline the sequence of machining operations. Prepare geometric layouts on graph paper or with computer-assisted drafting software. Write instruction sheets and cutter lists to guide machine setup and operation, and write machine-instruction programs in symbolic language for numerical control tape or a direct numerical control database. Verify encoded instructions against the original program, correct errors or omissions, and observe machine operation during trial runs. The role requires on-site work, punctual attendance, cooperation with others, respectful interaction with the public and coworkers, and the ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and interchange with others in the department. Overtime may be required. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with at least two years of related experience or training. The employer states that it cannot sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this role.
