About The Position

Successful candidate is responsible for the activities in the Machine Shop, consisting of a variety of tasks of considerable complexity which require the manufacture of parts and components to extremely close tolerances. The candidate is also responsible for: Verify the fabricated parts meet the requirements. Have the capability to learn heritage and cutting-edge optical fabrication, test, and metrology skills as they arise and as they are needed. Have the capability to develop new optical fabrication, test, and metrology techniques as they are needed on glass, ceramics and metals. Serve as laboratory manager of the optical shop spaces at GSFC. Maintain equipment in the optical shop spaces at GSFC, including calibration tracking, the management of external parters to perform maintenance and calibration, etc. Generate and execute procedural documentation, like work order authorizations (WOAs), cert logs, and similar. Generate reports on optical shop activities, including project reports to the customer on optical fabrication, test, and verification, and weekly status reports. Willing to learn the following: optical fabrication techniques heritage grinding and polishing of glass and metal substrates to conic and other prescriptions CNC optical fabrication machine operations Single point diamond turning (SPDT) and/or other diamond machining operations optical testing interferometry (e.g., Twyman-Green, Fizeau, test plates, and similar instruments and associated, common optical test sets) image testing (e.g., Foucault knife-edge testing) common radius of curvature and other prescription test capabilities

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of operation and 3 years of CNC machine programming experience on mills, lathes or mill turning equipment (Mazak, Haas, Fadal, Yasnac, Fanuc, Agie Charmilles, Micron).
  • Knowledge and experience using tool path verification software or tool collision detection software such as Vericut.
  • Applies knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, machine shop procedures.
  • Good knowledge in the use of edge finders, indicators, etc.
  • Able to work with multiple Computer Aided Design CAD programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Mastercam or Feature CAM programming knowledge is desired.
  • Knowledge of regular maintenance and scheduled maintenance of some CNC machines, manual machines desired.
  • Certificates of training obtained for software, controllers, or from Original Equipment Manufacturers is desired.
  • Knowledge of and experience using part tracking software such as Acumatica, Katana, JobBoss or Epicor is desired.
  • Prefer knowledge of machining and polishing materials such as glass and ceramics.

Responsibilities

  • Verify the fabricated parts meet the requirements.
  • Learn heritage and cutting-edge optical fabrication, test, and metrology skills.
  • Develop new optical fabrication, test, and metrology techniques on glass, ceramics and metals.
  • Serve as laboratory manager of the optical shop spaces at GSFC.
  • Maintain equipment in the optical shop spaces at GSFC, including calibration tracking and managing external partners for maintenance and calibration.
  • Generate and execute procedural documentation, like work order authorizations (WOAs) and cert logs.
  • Generate reports on optical shop activities, including project reports and weekly status reports.
  • Assembles or fabricates all part set-ups and operates all machine tools to fabricate parts per Engineering drawings or sketches.
  • Studies specifications, such as blueprints and sketches to determine dimensions and tolerances of piece to be machined, sequence of operations, tooling and materials and machines required.
  • Establishes most efficient machining procedure to build the hardware.
  • Verifies conformance of work piece to specification prior to turning in work, using calipers, micrometers, and various other inspection equipment.
  • Uses hand tools to assemble parts when necessary.
  • Generates complete CNC machine documentation.
  • Inputs part data into machine tool computers from Engineering drawings and sketches to produce finished hardware.
  • Exercises shop safety and shop processes such as keeping work area clean and reporting safety issues.
