About The Position

The Horizontal Mill Machinist is responsible for following prescribed standards of operations, meeting cycle times, promoting on-time delivery through their performance efforts, demonstrating knowledge and application of lean manufacturing, promoting teamwork through their behavior, acting in accordance with Altek's Policies and adhering to the goals and expectations as defined by management. This role involves setting up equipment to run production and/or prototype parts according to blueprints, developing and maintaining New Product Introduction (NPI) product/setup documentation, troubleshooting processes, programs, equipment and tooling, and performing shop floor programming and editing of Horizontal programs to maintain product quality. The machinist will also inspect product according to Altek’s Quality Policies and Procedures, build and maintain positive rapport with other employees, customers, and suppliers, adapt and modify as circumstances warrant, audit co-workers in meeting quality standards, demonstrate safe work habits, and embrace Altek's Quality Policy, vision, core values, and expected behaviors. Additionally, the role includes completing end-of-shift tie-in logs and accurately entering part and scrap counts into Paperless.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience with various machine tool controls (G-M Codes & Mazatrol a plus)
  • Experience with set-up and operation of CNC machines, preferably with Horizontal Mills
  • Experience with automated equipment common in a machining environment (e.g., CNC Horizontal Mills and Vertical Mills)
  • Quality-conscious attitude and pride of ownership in designated responsibilities
  • Ability to accurately read blueprints
  • Skilled with portable measuring devices used in the production processes at Altek
  • Must be able to read and comply with work instructions, quality documents, and other pertinent written material
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and calculating
  • Working knowledge of mathematical formulas needed to calculate product dimensioning
  • Knowledge and skills to pre-stage raw material, perform setups, conduct tool changes, run product and make tool off-sets for proven processes
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate computer knowledge and skills
  • Must have a reasonably complete set of personal tools

Nice To Haves

  • CNC Machining Certificate preferred or a minimum of 7 years as a Machine Shop Set-up Person
  • Five-years in Horizontal Machine experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Follows the procedures established in the work instructions or by the Assistant Manager(s), Supervisor and/or Lead
  • Follows prescribed standards of Horizontal operations and set-ups of established processes
  • Pays strong attention to detail, exhibits critical thinking skills and meets the cycle times set forth
  • Takes an active role in organizing and improving current processes through SWI change suggestions
  • Is proactive in maintaining established company policies and manufacturing strategies
  • Sets up equipment to run production and/or prototype parts according to blueprints
  • Proficient at developing and maintaining New Product Introduction (NPI) product/setup documentation
  • Troubleshoots processes, programs, equipment and tooling
  • Performs shop floor programming and editing of Horizontal programs to maintain product quality
