2nd Shift CNC Machinist

Allegion•Princeton, IL
•$20 - $35

About The Position

Allegion is hiring a second-shift CNC Machinist to set up, operate, monitor, and troubleshoot CNC machinery and related automation. The role involves interpreting technical documents, selecting and securing tooling and fixtures, entering and modifying machine programs, calculating machining parameters, and verifying machine settings through test runs and inspections. The machinist also supports tooling and fixture maintenance, collaborates with engineering and tooling personnel, trains operators, and helps the production cell meet efficiency and quality targets. The position requires following safety and quality standards, maintaining an orderly work area using 5S practices, and performing quality checks, including first-piece inspection and statistical sampling. Work may include lifting and moving materials, operating tools and testing equipment, and exposure to manufacturing conditions such as noise, vibration, dust, chemicals, temperature changes, sharp objects, and guarded moving machinery. Overtime may be required.

Requirements

  • At least three years of related experience with Fanuc CNC controls.
  • Ability to use a variety of gauges and precision measuring tools, including micrometers and calipers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships and work independently using sound judgment.
  • Ability to use Kanban workflow for optimal build performance.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, time-management, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, schedules, rules, and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret method sheets, assembly drawings, production reports, blueprints, shop schedules, Kanban materials, and operating and maintenance manuals.
  • Ability to identify components, develop extensive parts knowledge, and obtain appropriate parts for workstation operation.
  • Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships, conduct visual or mechanical inspections, and distinguish colors and finishes.
  • Knowledge of Fanuc controls and the Allen Bradley HMI used throughout LCN.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, software, applications, and programming; intermediate math and computer skills; ability to use the AS400 application.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to use two-hand controls, pneumatic tools, and testing equipment, and to read mechanical drawings (CAD).
  • Ability to perform jobs at the same or lower labor grade than the current job.
  • Manual dexterity and ability to use hands and fingers, reach, twist, and perform repetitive motions; stand, walk, or sit for extended periods; and occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Ability to lift continuously up to 5 pounds, frequently up to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 60 pounds, and rarely over 60 pounds; lifts over 35 pounds should be performed with assistance.
  • Ability to work around approved facility chemicals, temperature changes, moderate and intermittent loud noise, vibration, dirt or dust, sharp parts, and guarded moving mechanical parts.

Responsibilities

  • Use hand tools, ratchets, pneumatic tools, and other devices to secure parts and fixtures.
  • Move parts, materials, containers, and fixtures using hoists, pallet jacks, or forklifts.
  • Train personnel on CNC machinery, robotics automation, and tool setting.
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, manuals, or sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, operation sequences, and setup requirements.
  • Select, align, and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills and lathes.
  • Set machine controls for speed, feed, coolant flow, and cutting depth and angle, or enter, retrieve, and edit computerized control commands.
  • Adjust and modify machine programs, enter new specifications, and save program changes.
  • Start and monitor machines, identify malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust controls or programs as needed.
  • Work with engineering, tooling technicians, and outside vendors on tooling issues and ideas.
  • Troubleshoot tooling and machining problems; communicate issues and resolve or escalate them.
  • Set troublesome tools for operators and mentor operators in repeatable practices.
  • Repair fixtures and components after normal wear or machine crashes.
  • Calculate machine speed and feed ratios and the size and position of cuts.
  • Set up and operate machines on test runs or PPAPs to verify settings and programmed control data.
  • Install machined replacement parts and test units for functionality and performance.
  • Perform fixture, pallet, and tooling offsets for CMM accuracy.
  • Load and unload parts; measure finished workpieces using precision instruments, templates, and fixtures to verify conformance.
  • Set up machines by mounting, installing, aligning, and securing tools, attachments, fixtures, chucks, and workpieces.
  • Stop machines to remove finished workpieces or change tooling, setups, or workpiece placement as required by machining sequences.
  • Insert part programs into machine controls and monitor machine operation and control panel displays for malfunctions.
  • Work proactively with team members to help the production cell achieve OEE targets.
  • Determine tooling life with engineering and tooling technicians to improve efficiency and minimize scrap.
  • Perform coolant audits and monitor sump conditions.
  • Perform quality checks, including statistical sampling and process capability monitoring; run first pieces and obtain Quality Department approval at setup.
  • Follow safety regulations and keep work areas and equipment clean and orderly using 5S standards.
  • Perform work in a timely and accurate manner, other assigned duties, and tasks in other areas as needed.
  • Work overtime as required.
