2nd Shift CNC Machinist

Allegion•Princeton, IL

About The Position

Allegion is hiring a second-shift CNC Machinist to set up and operate CNC machinery and robotics automation while meeting safety, quality, and production requirements. The role uses technical drawings, specifications, and sample parts to determine machining dimensions, tolerances, operations, and setup needs. The machinist selects and secures tooling and fixtures, enters or edits machine programs, adjusts machining controls, monitors operations, and measures finished workpieces to verify conformance. The position also troubleshoots machining and tooling problems, works with engineering and tooling technicians on tooling and program improvements, supports operators, and repairs fixtures and components. The machinist performs setup and first-piece quality checks, monitors tool life and coolant conditions, supports cell OEE targets, and follows 5S and safety practices. Duties may extend to other areas as needed, and overtime may be required. The job involves frequent standing, walking, or sitting; manual dexterity and repetitive movements; occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; and lifting at varying frequencies and weights. The work environment may include approved chemicals, temperature changes, moderate noise with intermittent loud noises, vibration, dirt or dust, sharp parts, and guarded moving machinery.

Requirements

  • At least three years of related experience with Fanuc CNC controls.
  • Ability to use a variety of gauges and precision measuring tools, including micrometers and calipers.
  • Knowledge of Fanuc controls and the Allen Bradley HMI used throughout LCN.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software, including applications and programming; intermediate math and computer skills and ability to use the AS400 application.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings (CAD), blueprints, method sheets, assembly drawings, production reports, shop schedules, Kanban cards or boards, and operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, uses, repair, and maintenance; ability to use two-hand controls, pneumatic tools, and testing equipment.
  • Ability to use Kanban workflow and identify components and appropriate parts for workstation operation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, time-management, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, maintain effective work relationships, and follow written and verbal instructions, schedules, rules, and procedures.
  • Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships and perform visual or mechanical inspections, including distinguishing colors and finishes.
  • Ability to perform jobs at the same or lower labor grade than the current job.
  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity and use fingers and hands to feel, handle, or squeeze; reach, twist or turn, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit frequently for extended periods; occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Ability to lift up to 5 pounds continuously, up to 25 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally, and over 60 pounds rarely; lifts over 35 pounds should be done with assistance.
  • Ability to work around approved greases, oils, adhesives, temperature changes, moderate and intermittent loud noise, vibration, dirt or dust, sharp parts, and guarded moving mechanical parts.

Responsibilities

  • Use hand tools, ratchets, air tools, hoists, pallet jacks, or forklifts to handle parts, materials, containers, fixtures, and machinery as needed.
  • Train personnel in operating CNC machinery, robotics automation, and tool setting.
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, machining sequence, and setup requirements.
  • Select, align, and secure machine fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials.
  • Calculate and set machining controls, including speed, feed, coolant flow, and cut depth and angle; enter, retrieve, or edit computerized machine-control programs.
  • Adjust running programs, update machine programs, enter new specifications, and save modified programs as needed.
  • Start and monitor machines, compare control-panel readings with specifications, detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust controls or programs.
  • Work with engineering, tooling technicians, and outside vendors to address tooling issues and develop tooling ideas.
  • Troubleshoot tooling and machining problems, communicate issues, and resolve or escalate them; set troublesome tools and mentor operators on repeatable practices.
  • Repair fixtures and components after normal wear or machine crashes.
  • Set up and operate machines for test runs or PPAP to verify machine settings and programmed control data.
  • Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, or equipment and test their operation and performance.
  • Perform fixture, pallet, and tooling offsets for CMM accuracy.
  • Load and unload parts; set up machines by mounting, installing, aligning, and securing tools, fixtures, chucks, attachments, and workpieces.
  • Stop machines to remove finished workpieces or change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement according to machining sequences; insert part programs into machine controls.
  • Measure finished workpieces with precision instruments, templates, and fixtures to ensure they meet specifications.
  • Work with team members to help the cell achieve OEE targets and coordinate with engineering and tooling technicians to determine tool life and minimize scrap.
  • Perform coolant audits and monitor sump conditions.
  • Perform quality checks, including statistical sampling and process-capability monitoring; run and inspect first pieces and obtain Quality Department approval at setup.
  • Follow safety regulations and keep work areas and equipment clean and orderly using 5S standards.
  • Perform tasks accurately and promptly, work overtime as required, and perform other duties or work in other areas as needed.
