Gleason•Rochester, NY
•$22 - $27•Onsite

About The Position

Gleason is seeking machinists for first-shift openings at a company with more than 2,200 employees and 13 manufacturing facilities worldwide. The position covers multiple levels on Gleason’s Machinist Career Ladder, from developing skills under supervision to serving as a subject matter expert and mentor. Machinists set up and operate conventional and/or CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. They inspect finished parts to verify that they meet print specifications. Machine tools may include lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, multi-axis CNC machining centers, internal and external precision grinders, and CURVIC coupling grinders. The role requires meeting production targets, following company and departmental procedures, applying quality assurance principles, collaborating with teammates, and participating in continuous improvement, 5-S, and cost-of-poor-quality initiatives. Employees must be willing to learn, contribute to equipment development within their cell, and work overtime or different shifts as needed. The work is performed in a manufacturing environment and includes physical demands and potential exposure to industrial conditions described below.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Basic computer skills required; knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is a plus.
  • Machinist Level I requires basic machine setups, ability to follow detailed instructions, and basic trade mathematics; supervision, guidance, and training are provided as skills develop.
  • Machinist Level II requires the Level I capabilities plus intermediate precision machining skills, the ability to operate more complex machine tools, make CNC program edits, and apply knowledge of materials, tooling, feeds, and speeds.
  • Machinist Level III requires Level II capabilities plus a broad range of conventional and CNC machining skills, CNC setup and program debugging, advanced trade mathematics, precision measurement expertise, and the ability to complete machining operations and train less experienced machinists.
  • Machinist Level IV requires Level III capabilities plus expert operation and programming of CNC and conventional machine tools, advanced troubleshooting and process planning, complex metrology and shop mathematics skills, and the ability to handle unusual materials, tolerances, and machining procedures.
  • Meet production targets and comply with company policies, procedures, and quality assurance processes.
  • Work cooperatively, multitask, participate in continuous improvement activities, and be willing to learn and support equipment development.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, program readouts, technical directives, work sheets, drawings, and specifications to determine materials, tooling, machining sequences, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Align and secure parts in machines, complete machine setups, and follow specified machining instructions, feeds, speeds, and alignment processes.
  • Monitor machining operations and identify defective tooling, coolant issues, incorrect speeds or feeds, machine malfunctions, and dimensional deviations; make adjustments or obtain assistance as appropriate to skill level.
  • Use precision measuring instruments to inspect parts and maintain required dimensions and tolerances.
  • At advanced levels, plan and lay out complex work, edit or debug CNC programs, determine machining procedures and tooling, and carry out complete machining and finishing operations.
  • At the highest level, operate multiple machines, anticipate and prevent CNC process failures, recommend program and design changes, select metrology equipment, and adapt tools or processes for unusual work.
  • Train, mentor, and assist other machinists, with the level of instruction depending on experience and skill level.
