About The Position

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced CNC machining professionals with strong hands-on production expertise and the ability to evaluate machining strategies, safety, tooling, and manufacturability. This role supports the development of a high-quality CNC manufacturing evaluation dataset. Selected professionals will apply real production-floor judgement to create and validate objective grading criteria, assess machining approaches against provided CAD models and manufacturing constraints, and explain whether proposed solutions would be suitable for an actual production run.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on CNC machining experience
  • Strong practical knowledge of CNC manufacturing and production-floor workflows
  • Demonstrated ability to determine whether a machining approach would run safely and effectively in production
  • Experience interpreting CAD models, stock requirements, tooling constraints, and machining setups
  • Strong understanding of machining strategy, workholding, tooling, feeds and speeds, and production considerations
  • Ability to identify unsafe, impractical, or inefficient machining approaches
  • Strong written English proficiency and ability to explain technical decisions clearly
  • Comfortable producing detailed text-based evaluations and verification rationale

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Haas machines, particularly the VF-2, is advantageous
  • Familiarity with Makera Carvera or comparable hobbyist CNC platforms is also valued

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate proposed CNC machining approaches for technical feasibility and production readiness
  • Assess whether machining strategies can be executed safely and reliably on real equipment
  • Review solutions against provided CAD models, stock materials, machine configurations, and available tooling
  • Identify unsafe, inefficient, or impractical machining decisions
  • Apply hands-on production judgement when determining pass or fail outcomes
  • Develop objective and verifiable grading rubrics for CNC machining solutions
  • Define clear criteria reflecting real-world manufacturing requirements
  • Translate practical machining knowledge into structured text-based evaluation standards
  • Ensure rubric criteria can be applied consistently across different machining solutions
  • Create evaluation standards that distinguish production-ready approaches from technically weak or unsafe alternatives
  • Evaluate tooling selection, machining sequences, setup decisions, and process planning
  • Assess workholding, stock considerations, tool accessibility, and machine limitations
  • Identify potential collisions, unsafe setups, or process constraints
  • Review machining approaches for practical manufacturability and execution
  • Consider production efficiency, reliability, and machining quality when assessing solutions
  • Write clear verification rationale supporting each evaluation criterion
  • Explain why particular machining decisions should be accepted or rejected
  • Review sample solutions and document pass/fail reasoning
  • Identify missing information or assumptions affecting manufacturability
  • Produce concise, technically precise written assessments grounded in real machining practice
  • Validate grading criteria for clarity, objectivity, and technical accuracy
  • Review completed rubrics and sample evaluations for internal consistency
  • Identify ambiguous criteria or evaluation standards requiring refinement
  • Ensure assessments reflect realistic CNC manufacturing conditions
  • Contribute to reliable evaluation standards for advanced AI and manufacturing workflows

Benefits

  • Part-time independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote and open globally
  • Flexible scheduling based on project requirements
  • Compensation: $110–$165/hour
  • All project deliverables are text-based
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance
