About The Position

Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes and milling machines to machine metallic and nonmetallic workpieces. This role is responsible for machine operation, loading parts, operating controls, adjusting offsets, deburring, and inspection of quality parts for conformance to requirements. The operator must follow safety policies, quality inspection, and documentation procedures at all times. They will study and interpret drawings and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances, and observe machine operation to verify conformance to specifications. Inspection of parts using precision measuring equipment and documentation of inspection data is also a key responsibility. The role requires ensuring all set-ups are well documented and programs are saved, working collaboratively with a team to improve quality, process, and production rates, and detecting equipment malfunctions. The operator will consult with lead persons or management for assistance with problems and perform periodic preventative maintenance. Packaging parts for shipment, keeping the work area clean, and performing basic preventative maintenance functions are also part of the duties. The role requires conforming to the company’s culture of quality, service, and continuous improvement, while taking personal responsibility and treating others respectfully and ethically.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, memos, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information to other employees of the organization in small groups or one-on-one.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Machine operation, loading parts, operating controls, adjusting offsets, deburring and inspection of quality parts for conformance to requirements.
  • Follows safety policies, quality inspection and documentation procedures at all times.
  • Studies and interprets drawings and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, set-up and inspection sheets to determine set up and inspection requirements.
  • Observes operation of machine and verifies conformance of machined work piece to specifications.
  • Inspects parts using precision measuring equipment and documents inspection data.
  • Ensures all set-ups are well documented and proven programs are saved at completion of job with help of lead person.
  • Work in collaborative setting as a team with a goal of finding the best way to improve quality, process set-up, and production to ensure production rates are met or exceeded.
  • Detects equipment malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjusts machine, within capabilities, controls or control media as required to insure quality of productions. Reports all machine malfunctions to management.
  • Consults lead person or manager to assist with any problems.
  • Performs periodic preventative maintenance with to assigned machines with help of lead person and notifies lead person or manager of any problems with assigned machines.
  • Packages parts for shipment, ensuring that all machined surfaces are protected. Applies rust preventative when required.
  • Responsible for keeping equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform basic preventative maintenance functions on equipment.
  • May perform other duties as assigned by management.
