The CNC Lathe Operator (Level I) produces machined parts by setting up and operating CNC Lathe machines, bar feeding or bar pulling operations, verifying machine operation, maintain accuracy and tolerances, update travelers and routings. This position relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. The operator must understand and identify different material types and sizes, review program specifications or blueprints to determine and set bar machine operations and sequencing, finished workpiece dimensions, or numerical control sequences. They will input initial part dimensions into machine control panels, insert control instructions into machine control units to start operation, and review calculations for machine speed and feed ratios, and the size and position of cuts. This role involves entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, and proving part programs. The operator must understand the difference between M-codes and G-codes, and the process of setting up bar lathes by installing tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers. Understanding of drilling, grooving, cutting, turning, facing, knurling, thread chasing operations, and the proper use of each tool is essential. The role includes taking measurements, detecting malfunctions, troubleshooting processes, adjusting and replacing worn tools, and adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes. Use and proper storage of approved precision measuring equipment is required, as is checking the schedule and preparing the next set-up before the previous job is complete.
