About The Position

The CNC Lathe Operator will be responsible for operating CNC machines to produce high-quality metal parts according to specifications. This role requires precision, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of machining processes. The position may require the person to be on their feet for 8-10 hours standing or walking in a heavy manufacturing environment, constantly performing regularly scheduled maintenance duties. The operator must be able to lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds infrequently, safely operate a forklift, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment, and be able to see and hear in order to perform the functions of this position. The operator must also be able to speak, write, and understand English fluently.

Requirements

  • 4 years’ experience with set-up and operation of CNC lathes
  • Experienced in turning, drilling, boring and threading both internal and external
  • Experience with cutting tools; their applications and uses; and other tools associated with lathing equipment and machine work
  • Experience with required hand tools; their applications and uses; and safe handling requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Ability to use Conversational Programming required
  • Ability to identify speeds and feeds on different alloys required
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret detailed blueprints, schematics, etc.
  • Ability to properly use micrometers, verniers, calipers and tape measures to determine tolerances required
  • Ability to hold tight tolerances within .001”
  • Ability to use basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as required
  • Familiarity with cutting tools; their applications and uses; and other tools associated with lathing equipment and machine work
  • Familiarity with required hand tools; their applications and uses; and safe handling requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experienced in cutting a variety of metals and welds preferred
  • Experienced in a 4-jaw chuck setup preferred

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a clean and orderly (6S) work area and equipment to ensure a safe and productive work environment and quality products.
  • Pursues continuous improvement by suggesting, implementing, and supporting solutions/strategies to increase productivity, reduce scrap, and improve the operation, and decrease downtime; participates in continuous improvement activities and projects, including root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Set up and operate CNC machine to perform a series of machining operations such turning, boring, threading, facing, grinding, drilling and tapering on round metal bars.
  • Determine correct cutting tool to use based on material and other specifications to achieve required dimensions and finish tolerances.
  • Work from complex blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications, job orders, tooling instructions and standard charts to obtain such specifications as dimensions, tolerances, and tooling instructions.
  • Make required adjustments to machinery to compensate for material tooling, machine, or program conditions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve various types of operating difficulties, recommend corrective action on process failures within the department.
  • Determine correct cutting tool to use to achieve required dimensions and finish tolerances.
  • Safely operate overhead cranes to move metal bar parts.
  • Inspect part throughout machining process to ensure conformance to specifications using micrometers, calipers, and other associated measurement tools.
  • Complete necessary and accurate records, including inspection reports.
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned and/or as needed to support company objectives.
  • Meets on-site attendance requirements.
