About The Position

Schafer Industries is seeking a 1st shift CNC Lathe Machinist Apprentice for its Schafer Gear Works operation in Roscoe, IL. This position offers a $1,000 sign-on bonus and walk-in interviews are welcome. The pay range is $18 - $24 per hour. Requirements

  • Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces.
  • Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.
  • Ability to use a computer.

Responsibilities

  • Set-up and operate CNC Lathe Machines to meet production and quality requirements.
  • Operate assigned machinery to fabricate parts to the required specifications by reading work orders and specification sheets, properly powering up and down the machine, loading and unloading parts, ensuring proper tooling, creating and sizing jaws, changing chucking devices, recognizing insert and tool geometry, and making offset adjustments for size.
  • Ensure all parts are to the required specifications by reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications, verifying conformance of finished work piece specifications, complying with all work instructions, following and maintaining ISO and Schafer procedures, and completing quality certification requirements.
  • Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by conducting preventative maintenance, observing machine operations to detect malfunctions and adjusting controls as needed, and conferring with engineers and production personnel to resolve machining problems.
  • Support the Schafer Business Process by maintaining and improving productivity, measuring and marking dimensions, looking at tool life and new tooling to cut costs, reducing downtime, preparing computer setups, and maintaining the 6S program.
  • Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the company by channeling problems to the appropriate person, supporting policies and procedures, reporting issues to the supervisor, providing input for quality improvements, resolving problems, performing other job-related duties, helping evaluate job applicants, passing along information in the logbook, and training new personnel.
  • Assist and/or train in other lathe areas as needed.
