CMM Inspector Technician (Second Shift)

Toyota USCosta Mesa, CA
Onsite

About The Position

We are looking for a CMM Inspector Technician to perform dimensional layout inspection of machined castings and components on Zeiss CMMs using Calypso. The role involves loading, aligning, and fixturing parts, interpreting GD&T, performing various inspections, documenting non-conforming material, and collecting/analyzing SPC data. This position also includes performing CMM maintenance, supporting manufacturing engineering, and maintaining a clean and organized inspection lab.

Requirements

  • High School diploma AND AA Degree or completed trade school study in a quality, metrology, or machine manufacturing discipline.
  • 3 years’ experience as a CMM operator/programmer in a highly dynamic, metric driven, close tolerance manufacturing environment, with responsibility for programming, inspection and gage use.
  • Hands-on experience operating Zeiss CMMs with Calypso software, including the ability to create, edit and prove out programs – not operate existing programs only.
  • Ability to read and understand detailed blueprints with advanced GD&T experience (ASME Y14.5).
  • Competent with various forms of measuring equipment (e.g. micrometers, calipers, height gages, bore gages, gauge pins, go/no-go gauges, surface plate tooling, etc. ...)
  • Working knowledge of SPC fundamentals, capability studies (Cpk/Ppk), gage calibration control and Gage R&R requirements.
  • Strong / proven organizational and verbal communication skills and attention to detail, required to coordinate with machinists, engineering and supervision.
  • Working knowledge with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
  • Use of Pi-Web for data analysis reporting or AI software.
  • Professional communication via e-mail systems/internal messaging.
  • Experience with quality data collection, calibration tracking or ERP systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong background inspecting close tolerance machined castings and 5 axis milled components and vendor supplied parts.
  • Zeiss Calypso programming from CAD models, including parametric / PCM programming and report template creation.
  • Experience specifying or building fixturing for CMM applications.
  • Direct experience with root cause analysis associated with CMM results, machine geometry, cutting tools and human performance.
  • Passion for precision and efficiency.
  • Experience working in and maintaining an inspection lab and shop floor with a 5S culture.
  • Overhead crane, hoist and/or forklift operation experience for loading heavy castings and fixtures.
  • Gage calibration record keeping and control of measurement standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform dimensional layout inspection of machined castings and components on Zeiss CMMs using Calypso, in accordance with published inspection plans, control plans and engineering drawings.
  • Load, align and fixture parts per documented setup sheets and inspection instructions.
  • Provide feedback on instructions and setups to improve clarity and robustness of the process.
  • Establish and verify part alignments, fixturing and datum schemes; select, build and qualify the appropriate probe and stylus configurations for each program.
  • Interpret and apply GD&T per ASME Y14.5 to determine the correct measurement method, evaluate results against tolerance, and disposition parts as conforming or non-conforming.
  • Perform first article, in-process and final inspection; complete dimensional layout reports and record all results in the quality system with full traceability.
  • Document non-conforming material, immediately communicate out-of-tolerance conditions to Machining, Quality and Manufacturing Engineering, and support containment, root cause analysis and corrective action.
  • Collect and analyze SPC data; generate and interpret capability studies (Cpk/Ppk), control charts and trend data, and alert production to drifting processes before parts fall out of tolerance.
  • Perform required daily and periodic CMM maintenance and verification activities, including probe qualification, reference sphere and artifact checks, temperature and environmental logs, air supply checks and machine cleaning.
  • Support Manufacturing Engineering with correlation studies between CMM results and shop-floor gauging, and with fixture, tooling and process validation on new or revised programs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized inspection lab in accordance with 5S standards, and follow all safety, environmental and quality system requirements.
