About The Position

Human Resources announces an opening for a Cluster Lead Driver position located at the Transportation Services Office. This role involves supervising all Bus Drivers, Bus Attendants, and other personnel regularly or temporarily assigned to the cluster to ensure safe, timely, effective, and efficient route operations. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, four years of experience in bus transport operations including two years as a journey-level driver, and substantive experience leading bus drivers or equivalent supervisory experience. A Class B Commercial Drivers License with passenger, air brake, and school bus endorsements is required after placement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in bus transport operations.
  • Two years as a journey-level driver of passenger buses requiring a Class B CDL with air brake endorsement.
  • Substantive experience in leading journey-level bus drivers (or equivalent education, experience or training demonstrating ability to serve as Cluster Lead Driver with first-level supervisory responsibilities).
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and tailoring and delivering work products and services to meet the needs of diverse groups.
  • Ability and willingness to work as a Bus Driver, as needed, which may include split shifts and evenings/nights.
  • Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL), with passenger bus endorsement, air brake endorsement and school bus endorsement required after placement.
  • Having and maintaining negative test results for alcohol and controlled substance use.
  • Possession of a satisfactory driving record: no convictions of driving under the influence (or comparable) in the preceding five years; no felony conviction or assignment to alcohol safety programs in the preceding five years; no two or more moving traffic violations or required attendance at a driver improvement clinic in the preceding twelve months.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using knowledge of Arlington County road networks, neighborhoods, school boundaries and other local information directly related to effective transport of K-12 students is desired at the time of placement into this position.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises all Bus Drivers, Bus Attendants, and other personnel regularly and temporarily assigned to the cluster.
  • Recommends hiring and other personnel actions for assigned staff.
  • Trains, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of employees.
  • Uses planning/scheduling software (currently edulog) to ensure complete coverage and proper staffing.
  • Ensures cluster operations adhere to pre-trip and post-trip procedures, including vehicle checks and 'bus-keeping'.
  • Maintains radio contact with drivers and dispatch, updating them on conditions and providing instructions.
  • Prepares and maintains documentation such as attendance sheets and training logs.
  • Keeps abreast of driving and training records of personnel.
  • Observes performance in the field, aboard buses, and from ground locations, conducting ride-along check-ups.
  • Identifies training needs and coordinates with Driver Training.
  • Conducts behind-the-wheel training for Bus Drivers and in-bus training for Bus Attendants.
  • Stays informed about developments affecting school bus transportation operations, including licensing, training, vehicle data, road network data, and issues from APS principals.
  • Responds to traffic accidents and serious incidents, assesses situations, coordinates response, and takes immediate action.
  • Collects or forwards traffic accident and bus incident report forms and maintains associated records.
  • Drives a school bus to transport students as needed during driver shortages, to maintain skills, or in emergencies.
  • May operate a sedan or pick-up truck to reach field locations.
  • Uses a computer, radio, and telecommunications devices for operational functions.
  • Uses transportation routing/planning/scheduling software for look-ups and data entry.
  • May act as or for the Transportation Operations Manager, as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
