About The Position

Leidos Defense Systems is seeking a Cloud Network Engineer to support missile defense projects within the BMD Simulations and Analysis Portfolio. The role designs, builds, and operates high-performance, zero-trust network architectures across on-premises data centers, public cloud environments such as AWS and Azure, and classified enclave-based domains. The work focuses on network modernization, including software-defined networking, hybrid-cloud connectivity, and container-native networking in Kubernetes environments. The position is primarily onsite at customer locations in Huntsville, Alabama, and requires the candidate to be a resident of the North Alabama area and possess an active Secret clearance. Opportunity level and compensation are matched to the candidate’s experience. Leidos Defense Systems provides systems, solutions, and services across land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace, including enterprise and mission IT, intelligence systems, command and control, cybersecurity, logistics, training, and intelligence operations support.

  • Proven experience setting up restricted or compliant networks and securing inter-domain or enclave communication.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud networking services, including VPCs, VNets, peering, and transit gateways.
  • Experience with Linux operating systems.
  • Practical knowledge of multicast UDP and broadcast UDP traffic handling.
  • Experience with both software-defined and hardware-defined networking technologies.
  • Direct experience designing, deploying, and troubleshooting networking within Kubernetes clusters.
  • Ability to create and manage secure routing paths between isolated domains or enclaves.
  • Must possess an active Secret clearance.
  • Must provide full-time onsite support and be a resident of the North Alabama area.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with one or more Container Network Interfaces (CNI), such as Cilium, Calico, or Multus.
  • Background deploying and supporting enterprise-grade applications in production environments.
  • Experience defining and governing network access protocols, firewall rules, and zero-trust policies.
  • Familiarity with container-based network meshes such as Istio or Linkerd and service mesh concepts.
  • Experience routing traffic between instances from multiple cloud service providers.
  • Proven work with hybrid-cloud models linking remote clouds to on-premises resources.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with comfort troubleshooting complex network issues.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Proactive mindset focused on security, reliability, and scalability.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Relevant certifications such as CCNA/CCNP, AWS Certified Advanced Networking, or Certified Kubernetes Administrator.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy secure networks, including restricted computer networks and secure inter-domain routes.
  • Implement network segmentation, access controls, and policy enforcement across cloud and on-premises resources.
  • Build and manage cloud networking infrastructure using services such as AWS, Azure, and GCP.
  • Configure and troubleshoot multicast UDP and broadcast UDP traffic for high-throughput applications.
  • Deploy and maintain software-defined networking platforms and hardware-based network appliances.
  • Integrate network services with Kubernetes using CNI plugins and container-based networking.
  • Connect remote cloud instances to on-premises data centers, ensuring reliable routing and latency optimization.
  • Support hybrid-cloud architectures and remote enclave connectivity.
  • Automate network provisioning and changes using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting for network health and security events.
  • Collaborate with security, DevOps, and application teams to define network access protocols and rules.
