Cloud Java Backend Engineer
About The Position
We are seeking a hands-on Java Backend Engineer to build and enhance a cloud-hosted distributed data platform. The platform currently uses Apache Cassandra and gRPC APIs and is expanding to support additional data technologies, including OLAP databases, vector databases, and graph databases. The ideal candidate has strong Java and Spring Boot skills, experience with gRPC-based services, practical AWS knowledge, and a performance-focused approach to building scalable, low-latency backend systems. Experience optimizing P90/P99 latency is particularly valuable. The role is located in Jersey City, New Jersey. Local candidates are preferred, and an in-person interview is required. The client accepts W-2 candidates only and is accepting only U.S. citizens, green card holders, or green card EAD holders.
Requirements
- 10+ years of Java and Spring Boot development experience.
- Hands-on experience with gRPC services and API integrations.
- Practical Apache Cassandra experience, including data modeling and query performance.
- Experience with AWS ECS, Lambda, and Step Functions.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and scalable backend application design.
- Experience with performance engineering, latency optimization, and production troubleshooting.
- Strong data structures, algorithms, and coding skills.
- Ability to explain technical decisions and system design clearly.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with OLAP databases.
- Exposure to vector databases and AI-enabled data platforms.
- Experience with TigerGraph or other graph databases.
- Experience supporting high-throughput, low-latency applications in production environments.
