About The Position

The Cloud and Automation Engineer will join the Cloud and Infrastructure team, which owns and operates Azure, on-premises hyperconverged infrastructure, networking, and telephony. The team is expanding coverage across its platforms and moving work from manual support toward engineering, automation, and self-service. The role works across cloud and on-premises environments and requires understanding the dependencies among infrastructure, identity, networking, and applications. The engineer will collaborate with engineering, security, and business partners in cross-functional squads and help mature the team's practices. The position follows a hybrid schedule, with office presence expected two days per week. Candidates must be eligible for W2 employment; third-party and C2C candidates are not considered.

Requirements

  • 5–10 years of demonstrated experience integrating and automating infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code approaches in a public cloud, preferably Azure, and in a virtualized or hyperconverged on-premises environment.
  • Experience with Terraform and Ansible, ideally applied in an Azure environment.
  • A solution-oriented systems engineering mindset, commitment to continuous improvement, and ability to work effectively across teams.
  • A track record of solving problems across multiple layers of the stack rather than within a single platform or tool.
  • Experience in cross-functional or squad-based delivery models, partnering with engineers, architects, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong grounding in systems and cloud engineering principles, including availability, scalability, security, cost, and operability, and ability to reason about trade-offs.
  • A builder's mindset, with a preference for automating and codifying solutions over repeated manual work.
  • Ability to optimize and re-engineer processes rather than simply automate existing processes unchanged.
  • Comfort operating across hybrid environments and understanding how workload placement affects cost, performance, resiliency, and support burden.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to identify root causes across interdependent systems.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to document designs and standards for other engineers.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new platforms, tools, and practices as the environment evolves.
  • Good judgment about when to build, buy, or simplify rather than automate unnecessary complexity.
  • A reuse- and security-first mindset that accounts for user and developer experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to identity and access management, networking, or telephony systems in addition to core infrastructure.
  • Experience contributing to architecture decisions or documentation, such as ADRs.
  • Familiarity with reducing reliance on outsourced managed services through internal automation and tooling.
  • Experience in a highly regulated financial services environment, including familiarity with related risk, compliance, and change-control expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate infrastructure across Azure and on-premises hyperconverged environments using consistent engineering principles.
  • Automate provisioning, configuration, and operational tasks using infrastructure-as-code practices to reduce repetitive manual work.
  • Partner with cross-functional squads to translate business and application requirements into resilient, secure, and maintainable infrastructure designs.
  • Co-design systems and platforms with application developers, favoring immutable infrastructure that can be consistently rebuilt from code.
  • Help evolve the hybrid cloud strategy, including workload placement between the private data center and Azure, and build automation for portable, consistently managed workloads.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues spanning cloud, virtualization, storage, networking, and identity.
  • Establish and document standards, patterns, and runbooks that reduce tribal knowledge and improve supportability.
  • Embed SRE principles and engineering practices, emphasizing measurable reliability, proactive detection, and repeatable processes.
  • Identify work that can be insourced from external managed-service partners and build the automation and monitoring needed to support it internally.
  • Help shift from bespoke, manually managed infrastructure toward aaS models and reusable, codified platforms.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and incident response, contributing to root-cause analysis and durable fixes.
  • Stay current with cloud, virtualization, and automation practices and share new approaches with the team.
