About The Position

The Closing Cashier is a customer-facing role in Hy-Vee’s grocery department. Checkers operate registers, assist customers throughout the store, and help ensure each visit ends positively. The role requires providing friendly and accurate service, processing a variety of payments and transactions, and supporting other store tasks as needed. No education or prior experience is required; training is provided. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen.

Requirements

Ability to follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables.
Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions.
Ability to communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience.
No education or experience requirements; training is provided.
Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen is a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

Provide prompt, friendly customer service, greet customers, learn their names, and help make each visit a positive experience.
Operate the cash register accurately and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Follow applicable guidelines for WIC, food stamps, and the sale of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay knowledgeable about item look-up and department numbers, item features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and escort customers to requested items.
Keep the register area clean and supplied, and report improper cash levels in the drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of shifts where applicable.
Communicate clearly on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel.
Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as assigned.
Follow personal hygiene and dress standards, as well as Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
