About The Position

The Checker works in Hy-Vee’s Grocery department and provides customer service while operating the cash register. Checkers assist customers throughout the store and help ensure a positive final impression of their visit. The role includes processing a range of payments and transactions, maintaining the register and nearby merchandise, and supporting other store operations as needed. Training is provided, and no education or prior experience is required. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen.

Requirements

Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions.

Responsibilities

Provide prompt, friendly customer service, greet customers, and help make each visit a positive experience.
Operate the cash register accurately and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Follow local, state, and federal requirements for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay informed about item lookup and department numbers, item features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and escort customers to items when requested.
Keep the register area clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable.
Communicate on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
Assist in other areas of the store and take on special projects as assigned.
Follow personal hygiene and dress standards, Hy-Vee policies, and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
