The Clinical Specialist (CS) is a licensed registered nurse who works within the three spheres of influence: patient, nurse, and system. The role requires advanced knowledge of nursing practice and the ability to apply standards within the nursing practice specialty area. The CS works independently to provide theory- and evidence-based knowledge that shapes clinical nursing staff practice and core competencies. In collaboration with administrative leaders, the CS provides area leadership for orientation, professional development, skills and competency validation, evidence-based practice, shared governance, regulatory compliance, nurse-sensitive quality indicators, and performance improvement. The CS assesses and designs training and educational programs to address identified learning needs, applies adult learning principles and culturally appropriate initiatives, identifies barriers to learning, and consults with departments, staff, and managers to determine goals. The position also establishes and leads process improvement initiatives. The Clinical Specialist supports respectful, responsive patient and family relations; maintains privacy and confidentiality; promotes workplace safety and regulatory compliance; participates in performance improvement and change processes; adheres to UAMS and departmental standards; and participates in continuing education and professional development.
