About The Position

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University is seeking to fill a clinical track faculty position in Farm Animal Internal Medicine and Surgery. This role is open to Assistant, Associate, or Full Clinical Professor ranks and is intended to contribute to the college's mission in clinical service, teaching, outreach, and the advancement of food animal medicine and surgery. The position will primarily focus on clinical service (65-75%) and didactic and clinical teaching, with opportunities for continuing education, outreach, and collaborative clinical research. The college is known for its robust clinical training program, offering extensive hands-on experience to veterinary students. The role will involve clinical instruction of professional veterinary students, veterinary technology students, interns, and residents, as well as didactic instruction in farm animal medicine. The development of a new farm animal hospital and outpatient cattle handling facility will enhance clinical teaching capabilities.

Requirements

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary degree.
  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the state of Mississippi.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Approximately 0-6 years of practice after residency or equivalent advanced training for Assistant Clinical Professor.
  • Approximately 5-10 years of practice after residency or equivalent advanced training for Associate Clinical Professor.
  • Approximately 10+ years of practice after residency or equivalent advanced training for Clinical Professor.
  • Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with doctors, staff, and students.
  • Ability to perform physical activity associated with farm animal handling and clinical care.

Nice To Haves

  • Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, American College of Veterinary Surgeons, or American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.
  • Residency-trained individuals eligible for final certification examination.
  • An advanced degree.
  • Experience in clinical research.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive clinical service in the farm animal hospital, including in-house case management for cattle, small ruminants, and other farm animal species.
  • Manage a caseload consisting of approximately 50% beef cattle, 30% small ruminants, and some dairy cattle, swine, and camelid cases.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, provide herd health consultations, and participate in the emergency in-hospital call schedule.
  • Collaborate with other faculty and house officers within the Farm Animal and Theriogenology Services, as well as with other clinical services such as Equine Medicine and Surgery, Anesthesia, Clinical Pathology, and Diagnostic Imaging.
  • Provide clinical instruction to professional veterinary students, veterinary technology students, interns, and residents.
  • Participate in didactic instruction in farm animal medicine and related disciplines.
  • Engage in continuing education, outreach, and collaborative clinical research activities.
