The Clinical Nurse provides direct patient care in the ENT and Plastic Surgery inpatient division at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The role includes patient assessment, diagnosis, care planning, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with nursing standards. Nurses care for patients before surgery and after phase I recovery through discharge, including complex postoperative needs. The unit is a 19-bed surgical division specializing in areas such as free flap reconstruction, surgical airway management, extremity replantation, and complex postoperative care. Nurses support recovery, patient and family education, and coordination with the interprofessional team. The department also has a surgical observation unit for postoperative or post-traumatic patients who require more intensive care and treatment. The position promotes patient- and family-centered care in a healing environment, and involves developing and documenting individualized plans of care with defined goals. Nurses assess physical, psychosocial, emotional, cultural, spiritual, and population-specific needs, as well as preferences and barriers to patient involvement. They plan and communicate care across the continuum, contribute to safety, quality, and regulatory compliance, and participate in professional development. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring the ability to remain alert and work safely. The position is full-time nights, working three 12-hour shifts. The unit offers exposure to specialized surgical nursing in an academic medical center and is home to the nation's only Nerve Transplant Program and a nationally recognized Wound Healing Research Center. The unit also has specialized expertise in hand surgery, microsurgery, peripheral nerve surgery, craniofacial surgery, and cleft palate reconstruction.
