About The Position

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist Team Leader performs complex pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes, and may perform specimen collection. Uses established knowledge base of clinical indications for laboratory testing and processing. This role involves performing complex processes including collecting bone marrow, performing and staining pathology frozen specimens, performing EKGs, processing and resulting send outs, and resulting moderately complex testing. The specialist obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients following proper identification protocols and appropriate techniques to maintain the integrity of the specimens and prioritizes collections to meet established turnaround times. They support patient testing by performing waived testing, loading analyzers, and performing lab functions, as needed, to meet patient demands. Adherence to OSHA and ThedaCare department policies for specimen collection and handling is crucial for a safe work environment. This role also provides training for new lab and non-lab team members, performs specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed, and enters, activates, and/or reviews physician’s orders in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality. Maintaining supplies and assisting with inventory and ordering is also part of the responsibilities. The specialist performs special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) and collaborates with multiple disciplines to effectively and efficiently provide patient care. They apply critical thinking to assess, plan, and implement day-to-day operations, and communicate updates to team members. The role involves delegating team member duties in relation to patient needs, and managing evolving demands from team members, physicians, equipment, and scheduling. Additionally, the specialist manages call schedules, revenue and usage audits, and meeting minutes, and acts as a super user with department diagnostic equipment and supplies.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Four years of laboratory experience or a Bachelor’s degree

Responsibilities

  • Performs specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed including entering physician’s orders, processing cancelations, and entering add-on tests to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Enters, activates, and/or reviews physician’s order in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality.
  • Maintains supplies and assists with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities.
  • Performs special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law.
  • Collaborates with multiple disciplines to effectively and efficiently provide patient care and achieve the desired patient outcomes.
  • Applies critical thinking to assess, plan, and implement day-to-day operations, and communicates updates to team members.
