As a Clinical Laboratory Assistant, you are responsible for sample preparation, sample testing, and post analytical tasks such as sample storage and disposal, and maintenance procedures.

Requirements

  • Ensures that all samples are properly labeled and identified before testing.
  • Follows established protocol for the handling of unsuitable samples.
  • Operates complex instruments following department procedures.
  • Performs simple non-interpretive testing procedures under the supervision of a qualified technologist.
  • Ensures all inquiries and problems are handled in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Performs routine equipment maintenance following documented procedures.
  • Documents all maintenance performed, including minor troubleshooting following manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Ensures all quality control checks and standards are maintained
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent previous experience
  • Graduate of an approved laboratory assistant course or equivalent
  • Excellent computer skills

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of AS400 Data Entry system/LIS an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team centered environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all samples are properly labeled and identified before testing
  • Follow established protocol for the handling of unsuitable samples
  • Operate complex instruments following department procedures
  • Perform simple non-interpretive testing procedures
  • Ensure that all abnormal, critical and STATS are processed as outlined in the department guidelines
  • Responsible for the follow-up on missing samples, documentation and results as and when required
  • Ensure all inquiries and problems are handled in a courteous and professional manner
  • Ensure adequate amount of supplies are on hand and that validated reagents and testing kits to be used are in date order
  • Data enter the results into the company’s database as required
  • Ensure that quality control checks are performed as required in documented work procedures
  • Refer results for Medical Laboratory Technologist to review
  • Responsible for monitoring quality control guidelines and making appropriate corrections
  • Responsible to follow all relevant pre and/or post analytical quality protocols as described in the company quality assurance manual
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance following documented procedures
  • Document all maintenance performed, including minor troubleshooting following manufacturer’s instructions
  • Observe and report all malfunctions in equipment and maintain all required logbooks for routine equipment
  • Responsible for disinfecting the work area and equipment on a daily basis
  • Store and discard specimens according to appropriate department procedure manuals
