About The Position

The Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) reports to a Senior Technologist or Manager. Under general supervision—and with appropriate training and documented competency—the CLA performs complex laboratory testing within the assigned lab section. The CLA supports all phases of laboratory operations, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes, as well as daily operational tasks. The role requires professional-level knowledge to read and interpret tests, with preferred collegiate experience in the sciences, particularly as related to laboratory work. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science (e.g., chemical, physical, biological science, medical technology, or clinical laboratory science)
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and follow detailed procedures accurately
  • Proficiency with computers and navigating online lab resources
  • Physical and visual dexterity required for testing and analysis
  • Ability to stand for extended periods in laboratory or OR settings
  • Exposure to: Infectious materials, Chemicals and toxins, Laboratory odors and hazardous substances
  • Ability to lift and carry supplies as needed
  • Works independently within established departmental policies
  • Refers complex issues to a Specialist, Manager, or Director as needed

Nice To Haves

  • Collegiate experience in the sciences, especially laboratory-related fields preferred

Responsibilities

  • Receive specimens, verify patient identification, and validate sample appropriateness
  • Perform add-ons, reprint labels, and aliquot samples while avoiding contamination or mislabeling
  • Understand clinical tests, sample handling requirements, and testing methodologies
  • Interpret clinical significance of test results and collaborate with laboratory staff to verify unusual findings
  • Document and report results to ordering physicians or the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH), as required
  • Assist with training and orientation of new employees
  • Learn and apply new testing procedures as introduced
  • Troubleshoot issues such as incorrect orders or compromised sample integrity
  • Perform routine lab functions, including: Loading samples onto automation systems, Managing pneumatic tube systems, Handling blood culture samples, Conducting waived testing
  • Perform daily instrument maintenance, calibration, and quality control checks
  • Maintain cleanliness of laboratory equipment and work areas
  • Monitor and restock laboratory supplies to ensure operational readiness
  • Handle blood products and maintain appropriate inventory
  • Act as liaison between Blood Bank and Operating Room (OR)
  • Maintain OR blood storage refrigerators
  • Ensure required testing is complete for OR patients
  • Participate in Quality Management (QM) programs, including: Entering patient safety events, Verifying manually entered results
  • Comply with all: Quality Management standards, Safety protocols, Infection Control procedures, HIPAA regulations
  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned
