The Clinical Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of routine laboratory tests and procedures, including specimen preparation, receipt, and transport. This role involves patient registration, providing phone support, and maintaining competency with laboratory information systems. The assistant also trains new team members and students, handles laboratory orders, and ensures accurate documentation and specimen labeling. They are responsible for maintaining equipment, keeping the work area clean and organized, and practicing sterile techniques to prevent contamination. The position requires handling blood and body fluids, working with infectious patients, and performing minor laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology with minimal supervision. Phlebotomy services, including venous and capillary puncture, are also a key part of the role, adhering to strict antisepsis principles. The assistant collects and processes urine specimens, prepares specimens for all procedures, and manages inventory supplies, reporting needs to the supervisor. They are also responsible for reporting in-house test results and abnormal findings to clinical staff, and complying with all safety, cleanliness, and infection control policies, including OSHA regulations and the appropriate use of PPE.
