About The Position

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant performs pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes, and may perform specimen collection. This role is crucial in supporting patient testing by performing waived testing, loading analyzers, and executing various lab functions to meet patient demands. The position also involves specimen collection from inpatients and outpatients, adhering to strict identification protocols and techniques to maintain specimen integrity. Additionally, the assistant is responsible for performing specimen-related computer functions, entering and reviewing physician orders, maintaining supplies, and performing special specimen collections as required by law. Training new team members and ensuring adherence to safety policies are also key aspects of this role.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Completion of BLS Certification will be required for candidates working at ThedaCare Medical Center – Wild Rose

Responsibilities

  • Obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients following proper identification protocols and appropriate techniques to maintain the integrity of the specimens, and prioritizes collections to meet established turnaround times.
  • Supports patient testing by performing waived testing, loading analyzers, and performing lab functions, as needed, to meet patient demands.
  • Adheres to OSHA and ThedaCare department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Provides training for new lab and non-lab team members to retain top talent.
  • Performs specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed including entering physician’s orders, processing cancelations, and entering add-on tests to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Enters, activates, and/or reviews physician orders in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality.
  • Maintains supplies and assists with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities.
  • Performs special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law.
