About The Position

The University of Miami/UHealth Laboratories Department has an exciting opportunity for a full time Clinical Laboratory Assistant 2 to work in Miami, FL. The Clinical Laboratory Assistant 2 performs a variety of routine duties in assisting technical and professional personnel in clinical and research laboratories. An employee in this position provides broad support for the laboratory operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience required

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, handles, and accessions patient samples requiring laboratory testing.
  • Transports specimens and communicates test results timely and accurately.
  • Maintains required laboratory files and logs system in a neat and accurate manner.
  • Performs specimen processing, such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement.
  • Maintains adequate inventory level as per protocol.
  • Participates in the performance improvement processes for the department.
  • Maintains assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.
  • Generates patient reports and forwarding them to the proper departments/physicians.
  • Investigates and responds to all inquiries or problems related to referral testing; Answers all inquiries made by the Reference Lab and resolves problem associated with improper or inadequate samples. Answers all inquiries made by physicians or patient unit personnel related to specimen requirements.
  • Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol and rotates previous stock when it applies
  • Checks packing slips, verifies number of items received, documents, and gives copy to supervisor/designee.
  • Serves as a lead/Back-up when Supervisor is unavailable.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Receives, verifies, and processes patient specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures and quality standards.
  • Centrifuges, aliquots, separates, and prepares specimens for testing while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Loads specimens onto automated laboratory instrumentation and monitors workflow to ensure timely processing.
  • Sorts, racks, stores, and retrieves specimens following testing in accordance with laboratory retention policies.
  • Tracks specimen status throughout the testing process and resolves routine specimen handling issues.
  • Performs specimen accessioning, labeling, and documentation using the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Maintains adequate supplies, reagents, and work area cleanliness to support efficient laboratory operations.
  • Identifies and reports specimen quality concerns, equipment issues, or processing delays to appropriate laboratory personnel.
  • Adheres to all laboratory safety, infection control, HIPAA, and regulatory requirements, including CAP, CLIA, and institutional policies.
  • Assists in maintaining workflow to ensure turnaround time goals are met while supporting uninterrupted patient care.
