This position is accountable for performing clinical laboratory testing, following all applicable policies and procedures. The Clinical Lab Scientist I independently performs moderate to highly complex clinical tests, prepares and oversees the preparation of reagents, tests new reagents or controls, determines specimen acceptability, and calculates results. They accurately enter and monitor results, adhere to analytical schedules, and evaluate the acceptability of analyses before releasing patient reports. The role involves recognizing and responding to critical values, performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibrating laboratory equipment. Quality control, calibration, and proficiency testing are key responsibilities, along with initiating corrective actions when test systems do not perform as expected. The position requires accurate tracking and labeling of reagents, maintaining a safe work area, and demonstrating effective communication. Participation in staff and Quality Improvement meetings is expected, as is taking on additional business-related responsibilities or projects. The role also includes adhering to safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, proper waste disposal, and maintaining confidentiality. Direct supervision and training of unlicensed staff may be required, along with supporting training programs and maintaining professional growth through continuing education to meet California state licensure requirements. Answering phones, transferring calls, and taking messages are also part of the duties. Compliance with all health and safety policies, procedures, and practices, including the use of personal protective equipment, is mandatory. Other duties as assigned.
