This position is accountable for performing clinical laboratory testing, following all applicable policies and procedures. The Clinical Lab Scientist I role involves performing moderate to highly complex clinical tests, preparing reagents, evaluating new tests and reagents, determining specimen acceptability, calculating and entering results, monitoring computer review reports, adhering to analytical schedules, and evaluating the acceptability of analyses before releasing patient reports. The role also includes recognizing and responding to critical values, performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration of laboratory equipment, evaluating instrument performance, performing Quality Control and calibrations, selecting and evaluating control materials, initiating corrective action when systems do not perform as expected, and accurately performing and recording proficiency testing. The position requires the ability to detect and correct technical and operational problems, notify supervisors, and contact manufacturer or field service support if necessary. It also involves ensuring accurate tracking and labeling of reagents and supplies, maintaining a safe and neat work area, demonstrating effective communication, participating in staff and Quality Improvement meetings, and taking on additional business-related responsibilities or projects as delegated. This includes evaluating new techniques and procedures, method comparison, cost analysis, establishing reference ranges, writing and revising technical procedures, and evaluating productivity. The role requires adherence to all safety, environmental, and infection control policies, proper waste disposal, and maintaining confidentiality. The Clinical Lab Scientist I provides direct supervision to unlicensed staff as necessary and trains them in proper performance of procedures, supports training programs, and maintains professional growth through continuing education to meet California state licensure requirements. Other duties include answering phones, transferring calls, taking messages, and complying with all health and safety policies, procedures, and practices, including the use of personal protective equipment.
